Day Trip to Ogunquit, Maine (2)

おなかいっぱいになって満足した後は町を散策。 After being satisfied with the good meal, we walked around the town.   This is the bridge at Perkins Cove.

ここのキャンディー屋さんにもいつも立ち寄ります。 We also stop by at this candy shop every time we come to Ogunquit.

私がキャンディーを買ってお店から出てくると、外で待っていた来福君と Poirot はまたしても大興奮。何かもらえると思ってるんでしょうが、あなたたちはキャンディーなんか食べられませんよ! As soon as I came out of the candy shop with some sweets in my hand, Poirot and Laifu (who were waiting outside) got so excited.  I know you guys are expecting some sweets, but they are not for you!!

その後 Ogunquit の町を後にして、York にある Brown's Old Fashion Ice Cream へアイスクリームを食べに行きました。ここも私達が毎回立ち寄るお店です。 Then we drove down to York to get some delicious ice cream at Brown's Old Fashion Ice Cream.  This is also the must-go shop when we are in the area.

去年は2つのフレーバーを注文したら巨大なものが出てきて (2つ以上のフレーバーを注文するにはラージサイズしかない) 食べ切れなかったで、今回は "Kid size" という、スモールよりもさらに小さいものを2つ注文。私はメープルウォルナッツ味。 Last year we ordered two flavors and found out it was humongous (to get more than 2 flavors, you have to order the large size) and we couldn't finish even half of it.  So this year, we made two separate orders of the kid size.  I picked the maple walnuts.

夫はオレンジパイナップル。カップがかなり小さかったので、一瞬これなら全部食べられると思ったのですが、実はこの小さいカップにこれでもかというくらいがちがちにアイスクリームが詰め込まれていて (スプーンが入らないくらい) 半分くらい食べたところで飽きてきました。 My husband chose the orange-pineapple.  The cups looked pretty small so at first I thought I could finish all of it.  But I was wrong - the cup was totally, completely packed with a lot of ice cream.  In fact it was packed so hard and tight that I couldn't even scoop it out with the spoon.  After eating half of it, I got tired of it (albeit it was tasty).

Poirot はもうアイスクリームしか眼中にありません。 Once Poirot found out we were eating ice cream, nothing but the ice cream was in his mind....

来福君も興奮して思わず立ち上がって夫にアイスクリームをおねだり。二匹にも少しだけおすそ分けしたら大喜びで食べてました。 Laifu also got excited and stood up, begging for his share to my husband.  We gave a little bit of ice cream to Poirot and Laifu.  They were sooo happy.

アイスクリームを食べた後はすぐ近くにある Nubble Lighthouse へやって来ました。 After the ice cream, we visited Nubble Lighthouse nearby.

"来福君、写真、写真! カメラの方向いて!" "え～僕疲れてるのに～" "Hey Laifu, it's picture time!!  Look at the camera!" "Ummm, I am so tired..."

"しょうがないな～。これでいい?" ”OK、ばっちりだよ!" "OK, how about this?" "Perfect! We both look photogenic!"

今日は快晴でボート日和。 We had very wonderful weather today.

おいしいロブスターも食べられたし、大満足の一日。あっという間に3連休も終わってしまいました～。明日からはまた仕事です～。 It was a very nice day today - we had great lobster meals, enjoyed walking with two boys, etc.  So sad the holiday weekend was already over.  We have to go back to work tomorrow!!

Day Trip to Ogunquit, Maine (1)

今日は来福君と Poirot を連れてメイン州の Ogunquit という小さな町にロブスターを食べに行きました。朝早く起こされたからか、行きの車中では二匹ともかなりテンション低め。 Today we (with Poirot & Laifu) went to Ogunquit, a tiny town in Maine to ear some lobsters.  They were very inactive and looked sleepy on the way maybe because we woke them up early in the morning...

一時間も車で行くと海が見えてきました。お目当てのレストランはもうすぐです。 After ~1 hour driving, we were getting close to our destination.

ここがそのレストラン、Barnacle Billy's です。ここは私達のお気に入りのレストランで年に何回かは必ず訪れます。 We arrived at the town,parked our car and immediately headed to the restaurant, Barnacle Billy's.  We like this restaurant and come here several times every year.

レストランには素敵なテラス席もあって、Poirot だけの時はテラス席 (お店の人が注文を取りに来てくれる) に座るのですが、今回は二匹なので、レストランの横に併設されているセルフサービスの席に座りました。窓口に注文しに行って、出来上がったら番号を呼ばれるのでとりに行くというものです。 The restaurant has nice patio seats (served by wait stuff) where we usually sit with Poirot.  But since we had two dogs today, we sat at the outside table next to the restaurant (self-served).

お店に着いてもまだ眠そうな Poirot。こんなことは珍しいです。 Even after sitting at the table, Poirot looked very sleepy, which was unusual.

来福君も大きなあくび。昨日の夜は二匹一緒だったので興奮してよく眠れなかったのかな? Laifu had lots of big yawning, too.  I wonder they couldn't sleep well last night as they were too excited ...

夫はビールを頼みましたが私はただのお水。 My husband ordered a glass of beer, but I just had some water.

さっきまで眠たそうにしていた二匹ですが、食べ物が到着するやいなや瞳がきらきら～っと輝いて、舌なめずり。現金なものです。 Although they both looked so sleepy, they suddenly woke up with their eyes shining and licked their chops as soon as my husband came back with our food plates in his hands.  Unbelievable!

私はロブスターロールを注文。今年は既に4,5回ロブスターロールを食べてます。 I ordered the lobster roll.  This summer I already had 4 or 5 lobster rolls!

シンプルにロブスターとマヨネーズだけ。ロブスターの身がぷりぷり！ It's very simply - just lobster meat and mayo.  The lobster meat was very succulent.

夫は蒸しロブスター。夫はロブスターや蟹の殻から身を取り出すのが得意。いつもきれいに身を取り出して私に食べさせてくれるので私は手を汚さずに食べることができます。 My husband ordered the steamed lobster (1.5 lbs).  He is very good at taking lobster (and crab) meat out of its shell.  Every time we order lobsters or crabs, he cracks the shell, take out the meat and give it to me.  So I can enjoy it without messing up my hands.  I am spoiled!

やっぱりここのロブスターは新鮮でおいしい! わざわざ来る甲斐があります。 Lobsters here are very fresh and tasty.  It's worth driving here!

Lunch at The Clam Shack

5月になるとニューイングランド地方ではロブスターなどのシーフードのお店がオープンします (11月から4月までの冬の間は閉店)。今日は早速新鮮なロブスターと蛤 (正確に言うと日本の蛤とは違う種類のもののようです) のフライを食べるためメイン州の Kennebunkport という小さな町へやってきました。ボストンからは車で1時間半ほどです。 In New England, most of lobster and clam shacks are open in May (closed from Nov to Apr). So today we went to Kennebunkport, a tiny town in Maine, to try a lobster roll and fried clams. It was about 1.5 h drive from Boston.

ここには今日のお目当てのお店、The Clam Shack があります。"Shack (掘っ立て小屋)" と言うだけあって、注文する窓口があるだけのとっても小さなお店ですが、蛤のフライがおいしいと評判のお店です。 This is the one we tried this time - The Clam Shack.  It has just a very small place with windows to place orders (no indoor dining room), but it is famous for fried clams.  During the summer season, it becomes very crowded but today it was still calm (although quite a few people were eating here).

一応お店の横のスペースに、座って食べられるようにいくつかベンチと台があります。 Next to the shack is an open space where several benches and tables (wooden boxes used as tables).

その中に2つだけロブスターの形をした椅子がありました。もちろん私達がゲット。 But there are two special lobster chairs!!  Of course we got them!

私が注文に行っていた間、Poirot がこの椅子に座ってました。 Poirot was sitting on this lobster chair when I went to place our order.

注文した食べ物を席まで持って帰るやいなや、Poirot は椅子から身を乗り出して興味津々の顔でテーブルを覗き込みます。 As soon as I came back to our table with the food, Poirot stood up and looked over the food.  Sorry, nothing for you, Poirot!

横から見るとこんな感じ。とりあえず、私達が食べる間は Poirot には椅子から降りてもらいました。 I showed him one piece of fried clam and he tried to reach it (although I did not give it to him).  We had to put him down from the chair because he disturbed our lunch!!

これが私達の注文した蛤のフライとロブスターロール。蛤は身が肉厚で、すごくおいしい! 今まで食べた蛤のフライの中で1,2位を争うおいしさです。 This is what we ordered – a lobster roll and whole belly fried clams.  The clams were very thick and flavorful.  This was one of the best fried clams I ever had.

ロブスターロールは、殻から取り出したままのロブスターが一匹丸ごとパンの間に挟まってました。もちろんロブスターは新鮮で、これもまたおいしい！ The lobster roll had an entire lobster just out from the shell (not cut into small pieces) with a touch of mayo (very light) – nothing else and as simple as it can get.  The lobster meat was very succulent and yummy, too.

おすそ分けが欲しくてたまらない Poirot 君。こんなにじーっと見つめられたら落ち着いて食べてられません。 Poirot really wanted to get some food – he looked so desperate...

食べ終わってもまだちょっと物足りない、食いしん坊な私たち。もうひとつ "fried clam strips" (先程のフライとは違う種類の蛤を細く切って揚げたもの) というのを注文。これも良かったのですが、私は初めに食べたフライのほうが好み。 After finishing the roll and clams, we were not totally satisfied, so we ordered the fried clam strips as well.  This was not bad, either but I preferred the whole belly.

Poirot はついに立ち上がってじーっと私の手と口元を見つめています。お行儀悪いです。 He couldn’t wait any longer and stood up.  His eyes were following every movement of my hands and mouth.  Very bad manner!

食事の後は街をぶらぶらと散歩。小さな町なので特にこれといった観光名所はないですが、まだシーズン前なので人も少なくのんびりとした雰囲気。 After the lunch we walked around the town.  It is really a tiny town, and there was not much to see (some souvenir shops, restaurants, etc) but since it was pre-summer season and not crowded we could relax and enjoy the scenery.

イン州の観光地に来るとお土産物屋さんはロブスター一色。Tシャツやキーホルダーなどはもちろん、こんなハンガーもロブスターの形をしています。 In Maine, everything is made of lobster!  This is the cute lobster shaped hook hanged on the wall.

誰かの豪邸なのでしょうか?私たちにもこんな別荘があればいいのにな~。 Is this some rich guy’s mansion?  I wish I could own such a summer house here.

このベンチに座ってしばらくのんびり寛いでしまいました。今日は本当にすばらしいお天気でとても気持ちよかったです (でもこの後帰り道では前も見えない程の大雨に振られて大変でしたが)。 We sat on these chairs by the water and just relaxed for a while.  We had such beautiful weather today and it was very comfortable (although on the way back home, a very severe thunder storm hit us and it was a thrilling driving.

夏に海辺の町に来るたびボートが欲しくなります。値段はいくらぐらいするのか見当も付きませんが、ボート自体よりも維持費の方が高くつきそうですね。 Every time I visit a town by the coast, I wish I had a boat.  I wonder how much it costs, but I guess the maintenance fee is more expensive than the boat itself (I can’t afford it, anyway).

Portland, Maine

今日は、急に思い立ってメイン州のポートランドまで行ってきました。ボストンからは車で２時間ほどです。

Today we suddenly decided to go to Portland, Main.  It takes approximately 2 hours from Boston by car.

まずは Cape Elizabeth にある Lobster Shack でお昼ご飯。 At first, we had lunch at Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth.

このレストランは海岸のすぐそばにあります。 This restaurant is located by the sea.

珍しい植物。 I've never seen this plant before...

木のように見えたのですが、岩です。 I thought this was made of wood, but it is actually made of rocks.

一応建物の中にもテーブルがあるのですが、ほとんどの人は外のテーブル席で食べています。日差しは強いのですが、潮風があるため涼しいです。 We can also eat inside the building, but most of people were eating outside.

フィッシャーマンプレート。えび、あさり、ホタテ、ハドックのフライにフライドポテト、コールスローとビスケットが付いてきます。ホタテとあさりがすごくおいしい！ Fisherman's plate.  Fried shrimp, clams, scallops, and haddock along with French fries and coleslaw.  Scallops were excellent!

ロブスター。これはまあまあ。 Steamed lobster.  This was OK.

僕のお昼ご飯は？ Where is my lunch??

食後はステートパークでお散歩。 After the lunch, we took a walk in the state park.

こんな感じの道が海岸沿いにずーっと続いています。たくさんの人達がピクニックを楽しんでいました。 We saw a lot of people enjoying picnics.

すばらしい眺め。でも公園の名前からいって（Two Lights）、２つの灯台が見えるのかと思いきや、どこにも見当たらず。 Beautiful view.  But we were expecting two light houses (the name of this park is "Two Lights"), but did not see them anywhere...

これはなんという植物なのでしょうか？ What is this plant??

暑いよ～。もうこれ以上歩けない～。 Soooo hot!  I can't walk any longer!!

ポートランド市内にやってきました。Old Port。 We came to Portland.  This is Old Port.

なぜかベルリンの壁。 Berlin Wall.  I don't know why it is here...

いつかこんなボートを買えたらいいのにな～。 I wish I could buy a boat like this one someday...

あまりの暑さでのどがからから。ここらで一休み。 We got very thirsty because of the heat and took a break.

マンゴー、ブラックベリー、バナナのスムージー。 Mango, blackberry and banana smoothie.  Yum!

ポートランドにも、フリーダムトレイルがあるんですね。 I didn't know that Portland has the freedom trail as well.

歴史のありそうなレンガの建物。 These buildings look very old and historical.

ロブスター。 Lobster.

雰囲気のある銀行。 A bank.  Nice building.

Poirot はだいぶ疲れたみたいで、帰りの車ではぐっすりおやすみ。 Poirot got too tires and slept like a little baby on the way home...
