Lunch at Jo Jo Taipei

Today we came to Jo Jo Taipei, a Taiwanese restaurant in Allston for lunch.  We haven’t been here for a quite some time.

I was a little bit sick and felt cold, so ordered the Taiwanese style hot and sour soup.  This was for one person, but was in a big bowl and was more than enough for 2 people.   I loved this soup – better than usual “Chinese style” hot and sour soup.   I almost finished it all by myself, but it had lots of pig blood (which I don’t like) and I asked my husband to eat it.

The pancake with scallion and roast beef.

The mixture of three-cup chicken and three-cup cuttlefish (half portion each).

This is the mustard green with dried scallops, a special dish for New Year.  It was very light but with the very nice flavor from the dried scallops.

Then this huge pot was delivered to our table.  This dish was called “Buddha’s delight” on their menu (a dish for special occasions).  I thought it was the vegetarian dish as in most of American-Chinese restaurants a vegetarian dish is called “Buddha’s delight”.  But according to my husband, the dish is named this way because it (including meat/seafood) is so delicious that even Buddha (who is vegetarian) wants to jump out of the wall and eat it!

There were so many different ingredients – black chicken, pork, shrimp balls, quail eggs, taro, tofu skin, and many more.

I think it was pork-based soup with Chinese herbs.    It warmed me up!

At the end my husband insisted to order shaved ice.  It looked very yummy so I ate some but then I felt very cold again – I shouldn’t have tried it…  But overall we were satisfied as all the dishes were tasty and I think they were authentic.  On weekends they serve Taiwanese breakfast, so we’ll visit here more often from now on.

Dinner at East Ocean City

This year, January 23rd is the Chinese New Year.  For my husband who is Taiwanese, this is the very important holiday.  So we went to East Ocean City, our favorite restaurant in China Town, to celebrate the year of dragon.

At this restaurant, you can order live fish in the water tanks and they cook it for you in the kitchen.   These are the shrimp (1 lb) that we ordered.

And we also ordered a Dungeness crab.

And these are the shrimp after cooked.  They were simply steamed and we ate them with the special sauce.  They were so good and my husband and I were very concentrating on removing shells and eating them non-stop.

This is my favorite soup, the minced beef soup.

And this is the steamed Dungeness crab with ginger & scallion.

It actually had a lot of meat and was very tasty as always.  By the way, my husband cracked shells and took out meat for me so that I could enjoy it without my hands getting dirty.  What a nice husband!

The steamed oyster from Canada with ginger & scallion (right) and black bean sauce (left). These oysters were huge.

The fried boneless duck with taro.  The duck meat was covered with mushed taro, topped with bread crumbs and grilled in the oven.

I am not a big fan of duck, so I ate only taro...

The fried rice with salty dried fish and chicken.

And at the end, tapioca in sweet soup was served (for free).  I love all the dishes at this restaurant!  It is not cheap, but it was a special occasion to cerebrate Chinese New Year and it was worth it!

Brunch at Myers + Chang

Today I got sudden crave for the brunch menu at Myers + Chang, so we came to South End.

The fried egg banh mi  with sweet soy glazed bacon.  We really liked this dish when we came here last time, and really liked it, so we ordered it again.  It was still very good!

We also always order this dish, crispy pork belly bun.  Yum!

The green papaya slaw.  It was very refreshing (but quite spicy!) and I loved it.

The crispy salt+pepper calamari and jalapenos.  This dish was better than I expected.  The spicy mayo (?) was a very good match with the calamari.

We ordered this dish first time - the tea smoked ribs.  Wow, this was soooo good.  The meat was smokey, tender and flavorful.  I'll definitely order this next time!

For the dessert, we shared the lemon-ginger mousse coupe with homemade fortune cookie.  This was just OK.  We'll skip desserts next time.

After the brunch, we went to the dog park nearby as always.  Today Poirot was more social than usual, and enjoyed playing with other dogs!

Brunch at Chung Shin Yuan

Today we came to Chung Shin Yuan for brunch.  This restaurant serve Taiwanese breakfast on weekends.  We started with the sweet soy milk.

We dipped the fried dough into the soy milk and ate it.  Yum.

My two favorite dishes, the soybean noodle salad and seaweed salad.  I have to order these two every time I come here.

The pan fried white turnip cakes.  This is slightly different from the Hong Kong style turnip cakes, but the Taiwanese style is not bad at all.

These are the pan-fried buns stuffed with pork.  This was the first time we ordered this dish.  It was good, but after I ate just one, I felt very full....

The minced pork wrapped in soybean skin.

And this is also my favorite, the shao-bing with five spiced beef sandwich.  It was very tasty as always.

And for the dessert, we shared the tofu pudding.  We ordered too much (we always order too much at this restaurant), so we took the leftover to go and ate it for dinner.

Dinner at Highland Kitchen

Tonight we came to one of our favorite restaurants in Boston, Highland Kitchen for dinner.  It's been a while since we came last time.  We usually come here early to avoid the crowds, but by the time we leave, the restaurant is almost always full.

I think they buy bread from somewhere, but it is not bad.

The fried oysters.  Oysters were relatively small, but were fried perfectly - very crunchy but light and not oily at all.

The Caesar salad.  It had anchovy, which I love!  The dressing was also light and tasty.

I ordered the spicy jambalaya with duck confit.  It came with lots of shrimp, duck meat, ham, etc.  It was indeed spicy (but good).

My husband ordered the shrimp & grits.  I also like this dish very much, and we often order it here.

And at the end, a scoop of coffee and raspberry ice cream.  Whenever we come here, everything is very tasty (and their service is very nice, too) and we really like this restaurant.
