Dinner at Chili Garden

今日は辛いものが食べたくなって、本当はお気に入りの四川料理のお店、老四川へ行こうと思ったのですが、そこまでいくのがめんどくさくて近所にある四川レストラン、Chili Garden (川王府) へ行ってきました。 Tonight I craved something spicy and wanted to go to our favorite Sichuan restaurant, Sichuan Gourmet, but were too tired to drive there and settled for Chili Garden near our home.

本当は豚の耳 (紅油耳片) を食べたかったのですが品切れで、代わりに勧められた牛タンのチリオイル和え (椒麻牛舌) を頼んでみました。まずくはないけど味に深みがなくていまいち。 I first ordered the pig ear with chili sauce, but it was not available and our waiter recommended this dish instead - the beef tongue with chili oil.  It was not bad, but it tasted just spicy and lacked the depth of flavor.

寒かったのでスープを飲んで温まろうとワンタン入りのスープ (酸辣抄手) も注文。見た目はすご~く辛そうですが、飲んでみるとそれほどでもありませんでした。 Since it was very cold tonight, I wanted to have a big bowl of warm soup and ordered the wonton soup with chilisauce and vinegar.  It looked very spicy, but actually it was not as spicy as it looked.

筍のごま油和え (香油鮮筍尖)。これは普通においしい。 The bamboo shoots with sesame oil.  This was good.

これは私達のお気に入り、きのこと豚肉の炒め物 (雞腿菌炒肉絲)。 This dish was our favorite, the wild drumstick mushroom with pork.

これは台湾にもあるお料理で夫の好物 (螞蟻上樹)。でも使ってある麺は台湾では緑豆からできたものらしいのですが、ここのはライスヌードルだといって憤慨していました。私は一口食べてなんか洗剤みたいなへんな匂いがしたのでそれ以上は食べませんでした。ここへ来たのは久しぶりでしたがやっぱり老四川には遠く及びません...。 This dish (rice noodle with miced pork) is available in Taiwan as well and one of my husband's favorite spicy dishes.  But here, rice noodle was used instead of green bean noodle which is generally used in the Taiwan version of the dish, and he was quite upset...  We had't been here for a quite long time and were expecting some improvement, but we still prefer Sichuan Gourmet!

Lunch at Thmor Da

Thmor Da は Revere にある私達のお気に入りのカンボジアンレストラン。安くておいしいので最近はしょっちゅう来ています。今回はここ何回かの訪問で食べたものを一挙大公開 (と言う程でもないですが)。

We like the Cambodian restaurant, Thmor Da, in Revere and visit there often.  They serve very tasty dishes at reasonable prices.  Here are the dishes that we had at our last few visits.

これはカンボジア風春巻き。普通の春巻きよりかなり小ぶりで皮がカリカリ。 Cambodian style egg rolls.  These are Cambodian style egg rolls. They are much smaller than Chinese egg rolls and the skin is very crunch.

"トラの涙" という名前のビーフサラダ。かなりスパイシーですが病み付きになる味です。 The beef salad called “Tiger tear”.  It’s quiet spicy but I can’t stop eating it.

こちらはイカのサラダ。"トラの涙" と似た感じですが、辛さは控えめでちょっと甘めの味付け。カンボジアの魚醤、トゥック・トレイが効いています。 This is the squid salad. It’s kind of similar to Tiger tear, but is less spicy and slightly sweet.  And the fermented fish sauce adds the nice flavor to it.

これは夫が必ず注文するライスヌードル。ベトナムのフォーと似ていますが微妙に違います。 This is the must-order item for my husband, special Thmor Da rice noodle soup.  It’s similar to Vietnamese noodle soup (pho), but tastes slightly different (difficult to explain the difference, though).

牛肉とシーフード入りの河粉。中華料理由来のお料理なので見た目も味も中華版河粉に似ていますが、これもちょっとカンボジア風。 This is the special chow foon with beef and seafood.  This is obviously introduced from China, so it looks and tastes similar to Chinese chow foon, but again, it’s different….

ポークチョップのライスプレート。お肉は見た目は硬そうに見えますが実は柔らかくて味付けもほんのり甘くておいしいんです! お肉の下にはきゅうりやキャベツなどのサラダが隠れています。 This is also one of my husband’s favorites, the pork chop with steamed rice.  The meat looks hard but it actually is tender and I like it’s flavor – slightly sweet.

こちらは牛肉と野菜を辛いソースでいためたもの。私的にはもっと辛くてもよかったです。多分アメリカ人が食べやすいようアレンジしてあるのかも。次はもっとスパイシーにしてと頼んでみます。 This is the spice beef with steamed rice.  I don’t know if it is arranged to American people’s taste, but I prefer it spicier.  Next time, I’ll ask it spicier.

レストランはビーチのすぐ近く。一番最近訪れた日はボストンの冬とはお思えぬほど暖かかったので、Poirot と一緒にお散歩に行ってみました。 The restaurant is located very close to Revere Beach.  After our most recent visit when it was extremely warm for winter in Boston, we walked the beach with Poirot.

海岸にはたくさんの貝殻があって、Poirot は興味津々。 Poirot was very curious about shells on the beach.

閉じた貝を何とかこじ開けようと (そしてあわよくば貝の身を食べようと?) 必死でがんばってましたが無理でした。 He tried so hard to open one of the shells (I guess he wanted to eat the meat inside), but he couldn’t…

貝をこじ開けようとしている Poirot を無視してどんどん歩いていくと、ふと我に返って私達がいない事に気付いた Poirot は大急ぎで走って私達の所までやってきました。このあせった顔が笑えます。 While Poirot was trying to open the shell, we kept walking.  After a long time, he noticed that we weren’t around, and ran like crazy to catch up.  It was funny to see him surprised and upset!

Brunch at South End Buttery

今日は South End にある South End Buttery にブランチを食べに行きました。ここはカフェ・ベーカリーなのですが食事も食べられます。 Today we came to South End Buttery for brunch. It’s a bakery/café, but also serves brunch and dinner.

私は紅茶 (イングリッシュブレックファースト) を頼んだのですが、巨大なカップに入って出てきました。 I ordered tea (English Breakfast) which was served in a huge cup.

夫はコーヒー。 My husband ordered coffee.

まずはベーカリーバスケットを注文。スコーン、マフィンとバナナブレッド (の様なもの) が出てきました。私のお気に入りはアプリコットと生姜入りのスコーン。 First we ordered “Buttery Bakery Basket”, which included a muffin, a scone and a small piece of breakfast bread with jam & butter. My favorite was the scone – it had apricot and ginger.

これはフルーツサラダ。いろいろな種類のフルーツが入ってました。 We also ordered the fresh fruit salad (which I ate all).

そしてさらに私はワイルドマッシュルームのタルトをオーダー。生地がさくさくでおいしかったですが、値段の割りに、サイズは結構小さいかも。 In addition I ordered the wild mushroom tart with caramelized onions and arugula salad. It was flakey and good, but I think it was a bit expensive for this small size…

夫はスクランブルエッグとパンケーキのセット。またまた食べ過ぎておなかいっぱいになってしまいました (さすがにスコーンなどは全部食べ切れなかったのでもって帰りましたが)。隣のテーブルの人が食べていた苺のフレンチトーストがすごくおいしそうだったので、次回来た時に頼んでみようと思います。 My husband ordered “Buttery Breakfast” with 2 organic cage-free eggs (he chose scrambled eggs) and 2 pancakes. We both are too much again and were very full (we couldn’t finish the bread basket, and took the leftover home). I saw the person sitting next to our table eating the French toast with strawberries which looked very delicious… I’ll order it at my next visit!!

その後はいつものように Poirot をドッグパークへ連れて行きました。 After lunch, we went to the dog park with Poirot again.

わんちゃんたちに追いかけられると大急ぎで逃げる Poirot。そのくせ他の飼い主さんのところへ行っては甘えてかわいがってもらうのが大好き。たぶん自分のことを犬だとは思ってないんだと思います! He always runs away when he is chased by other dogs. But he loves to go to owners of other dogs and get patted (he stares at people with those innocent eyes, but I think he is expecting some treats from them). I don’t think he thinks he is a dog!

Brunch at Craigie on Main

今日はすご～く (2年ぶりくらい?) 久しぶりに Craigie on Main にブランチを食べに行きました。朝一番の席しか予約できなかったので、私たちが来たときにはまだほとんどお客さんはいませんでした (帰る頃にはもちろんほぼ満席でした)。 Today we came for brunch to Craigie on Main.  It's been really a long time (maybe ~2 years?) since we came here last time.  I could get a table only at the opening time (10:30 am), so when we arrived the restaurant was almost empty (but by teh time we left, it was full).

夫はコーヒーを注文。 My husband ordered the coffee.

私はハイビスカスティーを注文したのですが、これがめちゃくちゃ酸っぱい!! 酸っぱいもの大好きな私にさえかな~り酸っぱい! 今までこんな酸っぱいハイビスカスティーは飲んだことがなかったのでちょっとショックでした。 I chose the hibiscus tea, but it was EXTREMELY sour!  I love anything sour, but this was even beyond my liking.  I'd never had such sour hibiscus tea before...

私が注文したお料理はスモークした牛タンのハッシュ。上にはオニオンフライが乗っていてその下にはポーチドエッグが隠れています。これはお肉が柔らかくてちょっと甘めの味付けでなかなかおいしい。 For the food, I ordered the grass-fed & house-brined corned beef cheek & smoked beef tongue hash.  It came with the onion rings and a poached egg.  The meat was very tender and had slightly sweet flavors.  I liked this dish.

夫はハンバーガーを注文。ここのハンバーガーはボストンで1,2を争うほどおいしいと有名ですぐ売切れてしまうらしいです。なのですご～く期待していたのですが、私たちにとっては噂ほどにはおいしくないような…。お肉の味付けが酸っぱくて (傷んでいるとかいうわけではないのですが) なんか違和感が…。 My husband chose the burger.  The burger at this restaurant is very famous (many people said one of the best in Boston) and it is often sold out, so our expectation was very high.  But unfortunately neither of us liked it...  The meat tasted sour (not because the meat was bad/old), which we don't like for burgers....

これをみんなはおいしいといっているのでしょうか? それとも私たちが食べたのが失敗作で普段はもっとおいしいのでしょうか? もう一度食べて確かめてみたい気もしますが、でも多分もうここでバーガーを注文することはないと思います。 I am not sure why people think this burger is one of the best in Boston...  Or we just came on a bad day and it usually tastes better?  To confirm, we should try it again, but I don't think we will....

Poirot Sleeping on His Back

ふと振り返ってみるとすごい姿勢で寝転がってる Poirot 君が！ When I looked back, Poirot was lying down in a weird position!

そのまま眠ってしまいました。 And he fell asleep in the same posture...

"いや~、恥ずかし~、見ないで~" "I am so embarrassed!  Don't look at me~"
