Trip to Montreal - Day 3

今日はモントリオールでの最終日。とはいっても渋滞を避けるため朝ごはんを食べたらすぐにボストンへ向けて出発です。 Today was our last day in Montreal.  Since we wanted to avoid traffic jams, we left for Boston soon after the breakfast.

でもどうしても昨日行った Marché Atwater 内にあるパン屋さん、Premiére Moisson のパンを買って帰りたかったので立ち寄ってみました。いろいろなパンがあってどれにしようか迷ってしまいます。 But I wanted to get some bread at Premiére Moisson inside Marché Atwater that we visited yesterday, we stopped there on the way.

クロワッサン (普通のやアーモンド入りのもの) やバゲットなどいろいろ買い込んでしまいました。 There were so many varieties and it was tough to decide which ones to bring with me, but I got some basic stuff (croissants, baguette, etc) - by the way they were very, very good.

国境を越えるのにパスポートコントロールのところでちょっと待たなければなりませんでしたが、無事アメリカに戻ってくることができました (別に何も悪いことしてないのにいつもちょっとどきどきしてしまいます)。 We had to wait in line to go through the passport control at the border, but thankfully we could return to US without any incident.

ボストンまでの道のりの途中に私たちが年に1度位の頻度で訪れる Simon Pearce があると気づいたので遅めのランチを食べることに。バーモント州の Quechee というところにあります。 While driving, we noticed that Simon Pearce was on the way and decided to stop by for late lunch.  It's in Quechee, Vermont, and we visit there once a year or so.

15分ほど待たされましたが無事窓際のテーブルをゲット。アイスティーとラズベリーフィズという飲み物。 The iced tea and raspberry fizz.

ここはとても景色の良いところにあるのですが、今日はあまりお天気が良くなく、食べている途中で雨が降ってきました (去年来たときの写真はこちら)。 The restaurant is located just by the river, and usually you can enjoy beautiful view, but today ithe weather was not very nice and during our lunch it started raining (the pictures from our last visit are here).

パンはいつものようにパターミルクスコーンと、アイリッシュブレッド。アイリッシュブレッドはあんまりですがスコーンのほうは私のお気に入り。 The bread was buttermilk scones and Irish bread, as usual.  I don't really like the Irish bread, but love their scones.

私はスモークサーモンやアーティチョークの入ったキッシュをオーダー。 I ordered the quiche with smoked salmon, artichokes, etc.

夫は豚の肩肉を煮込んだもの。お肉はじっくり煮込んであっておいしいのですが、ソースがケチャップとバーベキューソースを混ぜたような甘ったるい味でいまいち。上に乗っているのはサツマイモのフライ。食後は雨が強くなってきたので散策せずにそそくさと帰宅の途に。 My husband chose the braised pork shoulder.  The meat was very tender and juicy, but the sauce was sweet and tasted like between ketchup and BBQ sauce which I didn't like.  It was raining hard after the lunch, so we did not walk around and just left for Boston.

さらにボストンに向かって南下していくと、雨がますます強くなってきて前がまったく見えません。かなりのろのろ運転で何とか乗り切りましたが、スリル満点のドライブでした。運転していた夫はとっても疲れたようです。 On the way, the rain was getting harder and harder and we couldn't see anything.  We drove very slowly for nearly 1 hour and finally passed the storm.  It was very thrilling!  My husband had to concentrate on driving very carefully, and got very tired afterwards...

途中で Poirot 君を預かってもらっていた友人の家に立ち寄って彼を引き取ってきました。合いたかったよ~、Poirot 君!。 And finally we stopped at our friends' house to pick up Poirot.  We missed you very much, Poirot!!!

Trip to Montreal - Day 1 (1)

今日から3日間、カナダのモントリオールへ小旅行! ボストンからは車で5時間程。朝早くに家を出たので道はがらがらです。 From today, we are going to Montreal for a short trip!  It takes ~5 hours by car from Boston.  We left home early in teh morning, and there was no trafic on the way.

途中で朝ごはんを食べようということで、バーモント州のモンペリエという町で高速を降りました。携帯で調べたところ Skinny Pancake というクレープのお店が良さそうだったので早速行ってみました。確かにクレープって、痩せたホットケーキ (skinny pancake) ですよね。 We decided to have our breakfast on teh way, so we got off teh highway at Montpelier, Vermont.  I looked for a breakfast place on my phone and found the restaurant called Skinny Pancake which serves crepes (crepes are indeed skinny pancakes!).

味のあるテーブルと椅子などがあり、なかなかいい感じのお店です。メニューによると食材もできるだけ地元産のものを使っているようです。 The restaurant is small but cozy.  According to their menu, hey seem to try using locally produced ingredients.

私は Choco-Monkey というクレープを注文。 I ordered the sweet crepe called "Choco-Monkey".

バナナとチョコレートソースが入っています。クレープの皮がもちっとしておいしい! It had bananas and chocolate sauce.  I liked the chewy dough.

夫は Eggs Fetatastic というクレープ。 My husband ordered the savory crepe called "Eggs Fetatastic".

卵、ホウレン草、トマト、オリーブ、マッシュルームとフェタチーズが入ってます。 It had an egg, baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, Kalamata olives, sautéed mushrooms and feta cheese.

その後はまた快調にドライブ。 After we got full, we continued driving.

国境も無事に越え、いよいよカナダに入りました! We could cross the border without any issue and entered Canada!

国境を越えて少しするとワイナリーがいくつかあるので寄ってみました。ここは Domaine des Côtes d'Ardoise という現存するものの中ではケベックで一番歴史のあるワイナリーです。 Near the US-Canada border, there are several wineries and we stopped at one of them.  This winery, Domaine des Côtes d'Ardoise is the oldest one that is still operational in Quebec.

門が開いているので、勝手に中に入ります。入場は無料です。 It was open when we arrived at ~10:00 am.

ここは広大な葡萄畑の中に、芸術家による作品が100以上も展示されています。欲しいものがあったら購入することもできます。 In their vineyard, more than 100 sculptures by ~60 artists were exhibited (11th edition of the annual sculpture exhibition NATURE ET CREATION).  All of the sculptures can be purchased as well.

つい最近行ったdeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum もそうですが、自然の中で芸術に触れるのはいいですね。 It is very nice to see artwork outside in the nature - I had a similar feeling when I recently visited deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum.

これは笑える作品です。 This sculpture is so funny.

葡萄がたくさんなっています。おいしそうだったのでひとつこっそり食べてみると、めちゃくちゃ酸っぱい~!! We found lots of grapes hanging from the vine, and I couldn't help but taste one.  It was very sweet - NOT!  It was very sour...

こちらは白ワイン用の葡萄。これはさらに酸っぱかったです。 These are for white wine which were even sourer..

こんな風にず~っと葡萄畑が続いています。暑い中、結構な数の人たちが農作業していて、ワイン作りも楽じゃないんだな~と実感。 The vineyard is huge.  It was a hot day today but I saw many people taking care of the vineyard - it certainly not a easy job to make wine.

池のそばの木陰で休んでいる、こんな人を発見。どうやら釣りをしているようです。 I found a man sitting under the shade by a pond.  He was fishing!

これは畑をかなり登ったところから下を見下ろした風景。芸術作品を見ながらだったので退屈はしませんでしたが、かなりの距離を歩き、疲れたかも。 This is the view from the top of the vineyard (or the highest part of the vineyard we could go).  We didn't get bored since we enjoyed the sculptures while walking, we walked quite a lot and I got a little tired afterwords...

ここは醸造の様子などは見学できないようでしたが (予約すればできるのかな?) 帰りに売店によって、いくつかワインテイスティング。やはりこの辺りはアイスワインが特産のようで、私たちもこのロゼのアイスワイン、Givrée d'Ardoise Rosé を購入。その後、次のワイナリーへ向かいます。 We couldn't see the place where they make wine (maybe you need reservations??), but we did wine tasting.  Around here, ice wine is well-known, and we bought this rosé wine, Givrée d'Ardoise Rosé.  It is fruity but not too sweet and I like it!

Day Trip to Vermont (2)

Quechee を後にした私たちが向かったのは、すぐ隣町の Woodstock というところ。 We then headed to Woodstock, a small town just next to Quechee.

お店の軒先に飾られていた三人の子供のマネキン。近くに来るまで本物だと信じていたので人形だと気づいてびっくり。 Three fake kids in front of a shop.  I believed they were real until I got very close to them.  I was so shocked!

飼い主に似ておばかな Poirot も、置物の犬を本物だと思って吠えまくり。道行く人たちにも笑われていました。 Like his Mommy, stupid Poirot thought this fake dog was real, and barked at it like crazy.  People were laughing at him!

このあたりには、映画マディソン郡の橋に出てきたような、木造、屋根つきの橋がたくさんあります。車も通ることができる普通の橋として今でも使われています。 Around this area, there are many covered bridges.  These are still used as normal bridges and cars can go through.

一車線しかないので対向車があるときは渡り終わるまで橋の反対側で待たなくてはいけません。 There is only one lane, so you have to wait until a car from the other direction passes by.

橋からの眺めはこんな感じ。素敵です。 A view from this bridge.  Beautiful.

川の水は透明でとてもきれい。 The water is very clear and clean.

カフェでちょっと一休み。 Take a break at a cafe.

これはまた別の屋根つき橋。 This is another covered bridge.

さっきの橋とはまた構造が違います。 It has a different structure.

橋からは滝が見えます。 You can see the water fall from this bridge.

こんなに素敵なところなのに、少し街からは離れているせいか、観光客はほとんどいません。 Despite this beautiful scenery, there weren't many people visiting here, I guess because it is a little bit away from the town.

さらに、Quechee 方面へ戻る途中の橋（この橋は鉄筋でできた大きい橋）からは、Quechee 渓谷が見下ろせます。以前夏に来たときにはここの川でカヌーをしている人達をたくさん見かけましたが、今日はいませんでした。 Then we headed back to Quechee.  On the way, you can enjoy the view of Quechee Gorge.

私の安物のカメラではうまく表せませんが、遠くの山は紅葉で色づき、本当にきれいでした。 I couldn't take good pictures with my cheap camera, but it was sooo beautiful!

Poirot も恐る恐る渓谷を覗き込んでいました。 Poirot was also looking down the gorge, but he looked a bit scared.

帰りの車中でも紅葉を満喫しながら帰宅。 We enjoyed fall foliage in the car on the way home as well.

Poirot はもちろんいつものように爆睡。 Poirot was of course sleeping like the dead.

Day Trip to Vermont (1)

ニューイングランド地方は紅葉の美しい時期となりました。台風（ハリケーン）一過で、今日はとてもよいお天気。そこで今日は紅葉を楽しむためバーモント州まで出かけました。目的地までは約２時間半のドライブです。 In New England, it is the time for autumn foliage.  A hurricane just passed us yesterday and we had a very nice weather today.  So we decided to go to Vermont to see beautiful colors of  autumn.  Two and half hours of driving.

道中のサービスエリア（ニューハンプシャー州）でちょっと休憩。めちゃくちゃ寒い！ On the way we stopped at the rest area in New Hampshire.  It was very very cold!

バーモント州の Quechee というところに到着。橋の上から Poirot が覗いているのは、 We arrived at Quechee, Vermont.  What Poirot was trying to look at was...

滝です！ A water fall!

ここを訪れた理由はこの滝を見下ろして食事を取ることができるレストランに来ることです。写真右側の建物がレストラン。約２年ぶりの訪問です。 One of the reasons we visited Quechee was to have lunch at the restaurant where you can enjoy the view of this water fall.  The building in the right hand side of the picture is the restaurant.  It's been about 2 years since we came here last time.

このレストランは Simon Pearce という有名なガラス工房の経営で、同じ敷地にはここで作られるガラスや陶器製品を売るお店があります（ボストンにも Newbury 通りにお店があります）。また、工房を見学することもできます。 This restaurant is owned by Simon Pearce, known for hand-blown glassware.  In the same space, there is a retail shop for glassware and handmade pottery.  You can also visit their workshop.

レストランからの眺め。早くから並んだ甲斐があって、いい席に着くことができました。川は昨日の雨でかなり増水しています。 A view from our table in the restaurant.  We waited to get the best seat!  Increased water level due to heavy rain yesterday.

レストランで使われているグラスやお皿はすべて Simon Pearce 製。 All glassware, plates, etc are made by Simon Pearce.

アイスティー。 Iced tea.

パターミルクスコーンと、アイリッシュブレッド。結構いけます。 Buttermilk scone and Irish bread.  Not bad.

私は Orecchiette Pasta というパスタを注文。新鮮な野菜や地元産のリコッタチーズがとてもおいしい！大満足の一品です。 My order - Orecchiette Pasta.  Very fresh vegetables and local ricotta cheese. Tasted very good!

夫はロブスターのサラダ。この一品も素材の味を生かした味付けでおいしかったです。 My husband ordered Maine Lobster and Butter Lettuce.  The dressing was very light (which we like) and we enjoyed a good flavor of lobster itself.

デザートは梨のチーズケーキを２人でシェア。上にのっている生姜がアクセントになって、秋らしい一品。 For dessert, we shared Roasted Anjou Pear Cheese Cake.  Crystallized ginger gave a good accent, and this dish was very fall-like.  We liked it very much.

食後は工房を見学。職人さんが慣れた手つきでワイングラスを作っていました。 After lunch, we went to the workshop to watch glassblowing demonstrations.

陶器製作の実演もあります。 We also watched pottery-making demonstrations.

その後、レストラン裏側にある公園をお散歩。紅葉がきれいです。 Then we took a walk in the park behind the restaurant. Beautiful colors!

Poirot も公園を走り回って楽しみました。 Poirot also enjoyed the beautiful park.

ニューイングランド地方は一年のうち秋が一番美しいと思います。 I think autumn is the most beautiful season of the year.
