Trip to NYC - DC - NJ - Day 3

今日は朝9時ごろ DC を出発し、ニュージャージーへ向かいました。ニュージャージーに住んでいる友人の家に一泊させてもらう予定です。4時間ほどドライブした後、友人の家に行く前に、とりあえずお昼ごはん!ということで夫の好きな豆腐チゲのお店、So Kong Dong へいきました。 This morning we left the hotel at around 9 am and headed to New Jersey.  We’ll stay overnight at our friends’ place in NJ.  After 4 hours of driving (and before arriving at our friends’place) we decided to have our lunch at So Kong Dong (Korean tofu stew restaurant), one of my husband’s favorite places in NJ.

ニュージャージに来るたびほとんど毎回このお店に来ますが、いつ来てもお客さんでいっぱい。メニューはシンプルに豆腐チゲだけ (＋焼肉 (カルビ1種類だけですが))。 We come to this restaurant almost every time we visit our friends in NJ.  The restaurant is very popular and is always very crowded.

ご飯は石鍋で炊きたてのが運ばれて来て、その場でよそってくれます。 The freshly cooked rice in the stone bowl is served at you table.

私は海鮮チゲ (海老、アサリ、牡蠣入り)、夫は牡蠣のチゲを注文。ぐつぐつと煮えたぎったのが運ばれてきます。辛さも何段階かある中から選べるのですが私たちはいつもスパイシーを頼みます。ここのはお豆腐がとても柔らかくて、やっぱりいつ食べてもおいしい~。 I ordered the seafood tofu stew (shrimp, clams and oysters), and my husband ordered the oyster tofu stew.  The stew is served piping hot (still boiling when served).  You can choose the spiciness, but we always go for spicy.  Tofu served at this restaurant is very soft and very tasty~

昼食の後友人の家にお邪魔して暫くのんびりと寛いだ後、夕食を食べにまた韓国料理のお店、So Mon Nan Jip へやって来ました。ここも友人の家に来たついでによく来るレストランです。 After the lunch, we came to our friends’ place – catching up (it was our first time to meet their 3 months old baby boy) and relaxing.  Then for the dinner, we again went to the Korean restaurant, So Mon Nan Jip (Fort Lee where our friends live has a big Korean community and many good Korean restaurants).

席に着くといつものようにまず大量につき出し（？）が運ばれてきます。 We went there at almost 9 pm, but still had to wait for our table – it was very crowded.  As soon as we sat at our table, many small dishes were delivered (kind of amuse bouche / free appetizers).

この写真にあるのはほんの一部で、サラダ、キムチなど全部で10種類以上! These dishes in this picture were only a part of the free appetizers – we had more than 10 dishes in total!

このちょっと茶碗蒸し風のお料理もつき出しの一種。ふわふわ、熱々でおいしい。 This savory egg dish was also the free dish.   It was hot and very airy - we all love this one.

お魚のフライもつき出しです。これだけ出てくると、お料理を注文しなくてもいいくらいつき出しだけでおなかいっぱいになってしまいます。 These fried fish are also the free dish.  Every time I come to this restaurant, I feel we do not need to order any additional dishes – by the time our ordered dishes are delivered, I’m always stuffed!

いつも注文する海鮮チジミ。結構たっぷり海老やイカが入ってます。 The seafood Korean pancake.  It had a lot of big chunks of squid and shrimp.

カルビの焼肉。 The Korean BBQ (beef short rib).

レタスに包んで食べるとおいしい~。 The BBQ tasted very good when wrapped in a leaf of lettuce!

Al Jigae。お魚の卵（多分たらこ？何の魚かわかりません）のちげ鍋。これは友人が好きなお料理なのでほぼ毎回注文します。 This is called “Al Jigae” – a spicy hot pot with fish (cod?) roe.  This is one of our friend’s favorite, so we have to order this one!

冷麺は私の大好物。でもほかの人はあんまり好きじゃないみたいで、私がほぼ独り占めしてしまいました。お酢をいっぱいかけて食べるのが私の好みです。どのお料理もおいしくて、みんな大満足でした~。 I love this Korean cold noodle dish.  But everyone else did not like it very much and I almost ate it all by myself!  Everything was very good and we all were satisfied!

Dinner at Chung Ki Wa

今日の夕食は近所にある Chung Ki Wa という韓国料理屋さんです。 Our dinner tonight was at Chung Ki Wa, a Korean restaurant near our house.

まず席に着くと韓国料理屋さん特有の、たくさんのつきだしが出てきました。ここはキムチなどの定番が多かったです。 As soon as we sat at the table, many small dishes were brought.  Very basic ones (Kimchi, etc) were served here...

ご飯はアルミの器に入って出てきます。つきだしとご飯だけで結構おなかいっぱいになってしまいます。 The small dishes and a bowl of white rice made me almost full already...

一品目はチャプチェ。にんにくの匂いが食欲をそそります。 The first dish was Jap-Chae.  The garlic flavor enhanced our appetite.

緑豆でできた麺はかなり弾力があります。 The noodles are made of green beans, and very chewy.

もう一品はイカの炒め物。ソースの赤い色からもわかるように辛かったです。 The second dish was the stir fried squid with the spicy sauce.  It was spicy!

Dinner at H Mart Food Court

今日は夫が歯医者さんで治療してもらうため、私の会社の近くまで来ました。治療が終わったのが午後5時半くらいだったのでその後2人で近くにある韓国系のスーパーマーケット、H Mart へ行きました。 This afternoon my husband had an appointment with his dentist near my company.  He finished at ~5:30 pm and then we went to H-Mart, a Korean supermarket, nearby.

中にはフードコートが併設されていて、5つほどレストランが入っています。今夜はここで夕食をとることに。私は Woojeon というお店でチャプチェを注文。 It as a small food court with 5 or so restaurants.  We had our dinner here tonight.  I ordered the chap chae at Woojeon.

胡麻油の香ばしい香りが広がります。これにキムチと白ご飯が付いてきます。 It had a good sesame oil aroma.  It came with the white rice and some kimchi.

夫は Young Chow Loo というお店でシーフード入りの韓国風ジャージャー麺を注文。 My husband ordered the seafood jajangmyeon at Young Chow Loo.

黒いお味噌と玉ねぎ、茄子等の野菜とシーフードが入っていました。韓国風のジャージャー麺はちょっと甘めで本当の (というか中華料理の) ジャージャー麺とは全く違ったものですが、おいしい！ This is the noodle dish with the black soy bean paste, some vegetables and seafood.  It is a bit sweet, but not bad.

食後はいくつか食料品を購入。日本産のものも豊富に揃っているので便利です。さすがにキムチはすごい品揃えです。 After the dinner, we did some grocery shopping.  The store carries many Japanese products as well and is convenient for us.  And of course there are so many different sizes/kinds of kimchi...

Lunch at Bon Chon

今日は Allston に来たついでに、新しくできた (というか、以前にもあったのですが一度ボストンからは撤退し、数ヶ月前にまたオープンした) Bon Chon へ行ってみました。ここはフライドチキンで有名なお店で、一度ニュージャージーの友人の所で食べた時は (テイクアウトでしたが) おいしいという印象があったので楽しみ。 Today we had something to do in Allston, so we stopped by at Bon Chon, a new Korean restaurant (well, it used to be in the same area but it was closed then reopened recently).  It is well known for their fried chickens.  I once had their chickens when I visited my friend in NJ (it was a takeout), and liked it, so I was looking forward to trying it in Boston.

メニューを見てちょっとびっくり。韓国料理店なのにに50%以上は日本のお料理が占めています。ビールもキリンとサッポロ (+ アメリカンブランド）。この時点で私の中では怪しいという疑念がちょっと芽生えました。 I was a bit surprised when I looked at their menu - although it is the Korean restaurant, more than 50% of their dishes are Japanese.  They only had Japanese beer (+ some American brands).  I got a little suspicious...

日本料理店以外で日本料理は注文しないことにしているので (結構多いんですよね、中華、韓国、タイ料理店なのにお寿司がメニューにあったりするレストランが。おいしくないし！)、少ない韓国料理の選択肢の中からチジミを注文。中は生焼けです。2切れ食べて後は全部夫行き。 I refuse to order Japanese foods at non-Japanese restaurant (because I know I get disappointed), so we decided to order a seafood Korean pancake from the very limited Korean menu.  It was uncooked inside.  I had two small pieces, then my husband ate the rest...

これがフライドチキン。ミディアムサイズで、ソースはスパイシーと醤油味を半分ずつ。噂では注文してから揚げるので30分位待つと聞いていたのですが、15分ほどで出てきました。ますます怪しいと思いながら食べてみると、熱々じゃない! 作り置きしているのでしょうか。確かに表面がぱりぱりで、その点は気に入ったのですが、お肉はぱさっとしていてソースの味でごまかしているような感じ。KFC のほうがお肉もジューシーでまだおいしいかも。 This is the combination plate (wings and drums), medium size.  We asked for half & half of spicy sauce and soy/ginger sauce.  I heard that these are cook to order and it usually takes ~30 min.  But this plate was served within 15 min of our order.  My suspicion grew bigger, but I tried it anyway.  Mmmm, it was not piping hot as I expected.  It was just "warm".  Were these cooked in advance?  It was very crunchy outside and I liked the texture, but the meat was rather dry, and I think they try to mask chicken taste (or old oil flavor?) with the strong flavors of the sauce.  I would say even KFC makes juicier chickens at much cheaper price...

チキンについてきたコールスロー。なぜか無意味に辛くて (辛いもの好きの私でも) 食べられませんでした (コールスロー自体の味と辛さがマッチしてない)。 This coleslaw came with the chickens.  It was very spicy which did not go well with the coleslaw itself (I generally like spicy food, but not this one...).

これもチキンと一緒に出てきた大根のお漬物。これが今日一番おいしかったかも。 This picked radish also came with the chicken plate.  At least this was good.

食べ切れなかった分はお持ち帰りに。結局私が食べたのは3つほどで後は全部夫が平らげました。多分もうここには来ないと思います。 Since we couldn't finish the chickens, we asked for a doggie bag.  I only ate 3 pieces and the rest was taken care of by my husband.  I don't think we will come back here sometime soon..

二人でがっかりしながら、これまた1月15日に Allston にオープンしたばかりの日本人経営のその名も "Sakanaya" というお魚屋さんに行ってみました。ご主人は以前築地で働いておられたそうです。 After the lunch we headed to the nearby Japanese fish market called "Sakanaya" (meaning fish market in English).  This shop just opened on January 15, and the owner (Japanese) used to work at Tsukiji fish market (very famous fish market in Japan).

いろいろなお刺身が売られています。お値段は安くはありませんが、新鮮でおいしいならちょっとぐらい余分にお金を出してもいいかなと思います。 Wide variety of sashimi-grade fish were in the showcase.  They are not cheap, but as long as they are fresh and tasty, I don't mind paying a little bit of extra.

今回は鮪の中落ちを買ってみました。家に帰ってネギトロ丼を作って食べるととてもおいしかったです。今はまだお刺身だけのようですが、これからは焼き魚なども店頭に並ぶ予定だそうです。お寿司やその他のおつまみなども予算に合わせて用意してもらえるようなので、是非利用してみたいと思います。 This time, we just bought some raw tuna.  It was very good.  At this time, they sell only raw fish, but soon will have grilled fish, etc.  They also can prepare sushi and other food depending on your budget.  I'll order some sushi next time.

Lunch at Dabin

今日のお昼は会社の人と3人で近所の韓国レストラン、Dabin へ行きました。韓国レストランなのにお寿司や天麩羅などの日本食のメニューもあります（おいしくないから頼みませんが）。まずはキムチなどの付き出し4種。 Today we went for lunch with two of my colleagues to Dabin, a Korean restaurant.  I don't know why, but they also serve some Japanese dishes such as sushi, tempura, etc (they are not good, so I wouldn't order them).  Four kinds of small dishes.

ランチメニューにはお味噌汁も付いてきます（韓国料理を頼んでも付いてきます。なぜに？）。アメリカではお味噌汁はスプーンを使って飲みます。初めの頃はかなり抵抗があったのですが今では慣れました。 A cup of miso soup (which is Japanese!) comes with the lunch menu even when you order from the Korean menu.  Why??

石焼ビビンバを注文。このレストランで私が注文するのはこのビビンバだけです。今日一緒にランチを食べた２人とも犬を飼っているので、それぞれの犬の話で盛り上がりました。 Dolsot Bibim Bab (Bibim Bab served in a hot stone bowl).  At this restaurant, I don't order anything else.  Both of the colleagues I had lunch with have dogs, and we got excited talking about our dogs (they are very picky eater and totally different from Poirot who eats anything and everything).

NJ & NY Short Trip (1)

今日は朝早く起きて、ニュージャージー州 Fort Lee にある友人の家まで遊びに行きます。Poirot もいつもより早起きして、眠そう。 We got up early this morning to visit our friend in Fort Lee, NJ. Poirot had to wake up earlier than usual, and looked very sleepy...

だんだん瞼が重くなってきました。 He was getting really sleepy...

友人の家に行く前に、まずはニューヨーク郊外にある Woodbury Common アウトレットでお買い物です。 Before arriving at our friend's place, we stopped at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, located outside NY City for some shopping.

このアウトレットは Ralph Lauren や Coach 等のアメリカンブランドはもちろんのこと、Chanel、Prada、Gucci、 Tod's、Dior、YSL、Bottega Veneta 等ヨーロッパのほとんどの高級ブランドのお店があります。来月日本に一時帰国予定なのでそのお土産などいくつかお買い物。 This outlet mall has not only American brands, but also most of the luxurious European brands, such as Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Tod's, Dior, YSL, Bottega Veneta, etc.  I'm planning to go back to Japan next month, so I bought some stuff for my family.

お買い物の後友人の家に到着。Poirot は“ここはどこ？”とでも言うような表情で辺りを見回しています。 At our friend's house, Poirot was wondering where he was now...

表情がいつになく厳しい...。 He looked more serious than usual...

と思ったらいつの間にかお昼寝していました。 But he fell asleep quickly.

少し休憩した後、すぐ近所にある日本食料品店、ミツワマーケットプレイスへ。ここは日本の食材なら大抵なんでも揃う大型店です。中には日本食の食べられるフードコートもあっていつも賑わっています。これは伊藤園のグリーンティーアイスクリーム。お茶の味が濃厚で、おいしい！ After taking some break, we went to Mitsuwa Marketplace, a Japanese supermarket nearby.  At this supermarket, you can get most of things you need for Japanese cooking.  It also has a food court where you can taste various Japanese food. This is green tea ice cream from a Japanese tea shop. It has a very strong green tea flavor and very tasty!

この後夕食を食べに行くので、ここでは何も食べずにおこうと思ったのですが、誘惑には勝てず山頭火のラーメンを夫と二人で半分こすることに。日本語で注文したら英語で返されました。昔よりも日本人の店員さんが少ないような...。 I had no plan to eat here as we would go for dinner soon, but I couldn't resist the temptation and ordered a bowl of Ramen noodles to share with my husband.

醤油ラーメン。あ～、日本の味って感じです。日本のラーメンと比べれば大したことないのかもしれませんが、ボストンにはおいしいラーメン屋さんがないので、これでも十分です。（麺がもうちょっと改善されるとさらにいいと思いますが） Soy sauce Ramen. It reminded me of Japan... I know this is not as good as Ramen noodles in Japan, but this is good enough for me (although I think noodles could be improved) as we do not have a decent Ramen restaurant in Boston.

夕食は韓国料理です。Fort Lee には韓国人が多く住んでいるようで、このレストランのある通りは韓国のお店一色です。お店の看板もハングル文字で書かれており（＋英語表記のあるとこともありますが）、まるで韓国にいるようです。 We went to a Korean restaurant for dinner. Fort Lee has a big Korean community and there are many Korean shops along the street.  You feel like you are in Korea.

ここには何回か来たことがあるのですが、いつ来ても大変込み合っています。 We've been here several times before, but whenever we come here, it is always crowded.

席に着くとまず大量につき出し（？）が運ばれてきます。おかわりも自由です。これだけでおなか一杯になりそう。 As soon as we sat at the table, many small dishes were served. Just eating these make you full...

これもつき出しの一種。卵料理なのですが、茶碗蒸しのような味でお気に入りの一品です。 This was also one of the small dishes we got. It is an egg dish (tastes like soupy omelet). This is one of my favorites.

そのほかのお気に入りは葱のサラダと、 I also liked this scallion salad,

イカ入りの大根キムチ。 And Daikon radish kimchi. It also had some squid.

シーフードのチヂミ。ちゃんと４人分に切り分けてくれました。ちょっと脂っこかったですが、シーフードがたくさん入っていました。 Seafood pancake. It was a bit oily, but had a lot of seafood.

Jae Yook Bokum。豚肉と野菜をスパイシーソースでいためたもの。そんなにスパイシーではなかったですが、お肉が柔らかくておいしい！ Jae Yook Bokum (shredded pork and assorted vegetables in spicy sauce). It was not very spicy, but pork was very tender.

カルビ。テーブルで自分たちで焼くこともできるのですが、煙とにおいがいやなので、キッチンで調理して持って来てもらいました。骨は Poirot へのお土産です。 Galbi. You could grill meats at your table by yourself, but we didn't want to get smoke and smell, so we asked them to cook it in their kitchen. We brought bones home for Poirot.

Al Jigae。お魚の卵（多分たらこ？何の魚かわかりません）のちげ鍋。お豆腐や海老、野菜なども入っていておいしい。おなか一杯になって大満足です。 Al Jigae (fish roe casserole in spicy broth). In addition to fish roe, it had some tofu, shrimp and vegetables and very tasty. We were so full and satisfied!
