Greenway Mobile Food Festival

I heard that Mobile Food Festival were being held today, so we came to Greenway to try some out.  Various activities including performances by local bands, food contests, etc., were also going on (although not so many people probably due to cloudy, cold weather).

I think more around 30 food trucks were there.  First we tried Mei Mei Street Kitchen, a Chinese-American food truck.

This is the fiddlehead fern tempura.  Not too bad.

This is the Chinese pulled pork on house baked bun - I don't remember how it tasted (not too impressibe, I guess).

Next we went to Lobsta Love truck.  Many people were making a line here.

We ordered the lobster slider, but it was kind of small for the price ($6), and the lobster was just OK.  Later my friend told me that I should have tried their lobster mac & cheese...  Maybe next time...

My husband requested to try Redbones, a BBQ truck.

He ordered (I think) St. Luis style pork ribs.  Many different kinds of sauce were also available to try (we had he moderately spicy sauce).

As soon as he found out we got the ribs, Poirot's eyes became wide open and shinny!

Poiro stretched as much as he could, hoping he could reach to our ribs on the table...  The ribs were very tender and tasty (meat fell out from bone very, very easily).  I gave Poirot one of the bones after I ate the meat, and he was sooo happy.

I was still not very full, so tried another truck, Bon Me, which served Vietnamese cuisine.

I ordered the rice noodle salad with chicken.  It was just OK, too.  Food trucks, in general, serve over-priced mediocre foods (of course there are some exceptions), and I was not fully satisfied with the dishes we had today.  Maybe it could have been a better experience if the weather had been nicer...

Trip to San Diego & Los Angeles - Day 2 (1)

This morning mu husband went to work, but I was too tired to get up and slept until 11 am...  Then two of his colleagues in San Diego invited us to join them for the lunch.

Both of them are Vietnamese – Americans, so they brought us to the Vietnamese restaurant, Mien Trung Restaurant.   Unlike in Boston, San Diego appears to have a big Vietnamese population and thus many Vietnamese restaurants and supermarkets can be found.

Both of the colleagues ordered the noodle soup called "Bun Rieu" (the rice vermicelli in crab broth soup).  I tasted a bit of soup, and it had a very good crab flavor.  I loved it.

My husband ordered the Bún bò Huế (rice vermicelli soup with spicy beef).  It was spicy, a bit sour, and very light.  This was very good, too!

And I ordered the Mì Quảng, shrimp and pork noodle soup.  It had shrimp, rice crackers, peanuts, etc.

Each bowl had a different kind of noodles – mine had the flat yellow noodles (which I’ve never eaten before).  The color is from turmeric.  The soup had very complicated and rich flavors. It was very good.

Then we went to the cake shop, Sage, that the colleagues recommended. It is owned/operated by a Japanese guy.

According to the colleagues this shop is very popular and cakes run out very quickly. They said their Napoleons are very good, but it was already sold out by the time we visited at ~1 pm. We ordered 5 pieces of cakes. This one is the (Japanese style) cheese cake. It was very light and has a very familiar taste.

This is the tiramisu. I heard this one is also a popular item. It was not too sweet, and I loved the bitterness of coffee inside.

This is the banana mousse. It had a good, strong banana flavor.

This is another type of cheese cake. It was more dense and creamy than the Japanese style one.

And this was my favorite, the caramel cake. It had a bit of saltiness and very good!

After the lunch (and big desserts), the colleagues brought us to Torrey Pines.  Here, you can enjoy paragliding and hang gliding flights.  I was wondering if they (my husband and his colleagues) didn't have to go back to work, but I guessed nobody was working today (the day before the Independence Day long weekend)...

Many people were enjoying paragliding flights. It looked soooo nice to fly over such a beautiful beach.

I really wanted to try, but unfortunately we had no time and so I gave up. Maybe next time!

This beach (a part of the beach?) appears to be the nude beach, but we only saw a life guard this time...

Then we visited Salk Institute (right by Torrey Pines), the biomedical research institute.  The colleagues used to work here before they moved to the current employer.  The institute looks like a luxurious resort hotel.  I don't think I would feel like working in such a nice place...

On the paving stone was the words of Dr. Jonas Salk (who is the founder of the institute and the developer of the polio vaccine).  Dr. Francis Crick who was one of two discoverer of DNA double-helix structure was at this institute as well.

This is the glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly, exhibited at the reception area.  Its name is "The Sun".  It is nice to see beautiful art work in a scientific institute.

Dinner at Pho Hoa

Tonight we came to Pho Hoa near our home to have some Vietnamese food.

The shrimp spring rolls.

As usual, my husband ordered the beef pho.  I've never seen him ordering something elese...

I couldn't decide what to order, but eventually tried another kind of noodle soup, "Bun Bo Cha" (with shrimp meat balls).

The noodles used in this dish was different kind from the pho.  The soup was spicy and not bad.  I think I like this soup better than pho..

Lunch at Hong Kong Supermarket Food Court

Today we went to Hong Kong Supermarket in Allston for grocery shopping, and had lunch at the food court inside the supermarket.

I got a Vietnamese sandwich (Banh Mi) with grilled beef at Pho Viet.  This sandwich had more beef than the one I got at Sub City in China Town the other day.  I liked the flavor of the beef, too.

I also got the summer rolls.  This was just OK.

My husband got several dishes from Dim Sum Chef.  This is his favorite, the steamed pork ribs with rice noodles.

This is the braised tripe.  I don't like tripe, so didn't eat it.

This one is the sticky rice with Chinese sausages, etc.  This was very tasty.

And this is the shrimp and chive dumplings.  We couldn't finish all the dishes, so took some of them home.

Dinner at Pho Hoa

Today I was thinking to go to another restaurant, but we were not too hungry and decided to go to Pho Hao for light dinner.

Fresh shrimp spring rolls. The peanut sauce is not only sweet but a little bit spicy, which I like.

I ordered Grilled shrimp plate. Too much rice compared to shrimp.... I only could finish 1/3 of rice and the rest was wasted... Sorry.

My husband again order beef pho. He never orders anything else at Vietnamese restaurants...

After the meal, we ordered pineapple/mango shake. It tasted good, but I felt so cold after I finished it. It's getting colder and colder in Boston. I wish winter won't come too quick...

Dinner at Pho Hoa

We went to Pho Hoa, another Vietnamese restaurant near our house for dinner tonight.

This restaurant opened about 3 months ago here, and this is our first visit. This is the chain restaurant, and there are more than 30 shops across US and Canada.

The restaurant is clean and spacious.

This is for the Pho that my husband ordered.

Fresh shrimp spring roll. This was freshly cooked after we placed an order, and was good.

Beef Pho. The soup had a good flavor, and my husband liked it very much (better than the other Vietnamese restaurant in the area).

I ordered "Grilled shrimp, pork and egg roll vermicelli". Vermicelli was ok, but pork was very tender and tasty.

After the dinner, I ordered "Jackfruit shake". I didn't know what Jackfruit was, but according to the google search, it seems to be the one in the picture below.  It tasted similar to sugarcane.
