Lowell Spinners Game

今日はボストン・レッドソックスのマイナーリーグチーム、ローウェル・スピナーズ (Lowell Spinners) の試合を見に行ってきました。これは去年私の勤める会社の社内行事で見に来るはずだったのですが雨で試合が中止になったためその振り替えです。 Today we went to watch a Lowell Spinners game (Red Sox minor league team) - this was a rain check for the game last year (for my company's summer outing) which was canceled due to heavy rain.

去年も雨が降る中食事だけは食べたのですが、今回も食事つき。メニューは去年と全く同じです。 Last year we had the dinner in the rain (but under the roof) and got the exact same diner this year as well.

メニューはポークリブ、ソーセージ、チキンウィング、牛肉のステーキなどこれでもかというほどお肉ばっかり。申し訳程度にコーンと玉葱のソテーもありましたがかなり栄養のバランスは悪いです (野菜サラダもあったのですが、レタスが萎びてて食べる気がしませんでした)。 90% of the dishes were meat - pork ribs, sausages, hot dogs, beef steaks, chicken wings...  At least we had some corns and grilled onions, too.

食事の後はスタジアムへ行って試合が始まるのを待ちます。 After the dinner, we went up to the stadium and waited for the game to start.

今日の先発メンバーが手書きで張り出してありましたが残念ながら誰一人知ってる選手はいませんでした…。 Today's players' names were hand-written on the wall but I didn't know any of the names...

今日はシーズン最初のゲームだったので、試合前にいろいろセレモニーがありました。まずはヘリコプターがどこからともなく現れてマウンドにボールを落とし、またすぐに飛び去って行きました。 It was the first game of the season, so we had a long ceremony before the game.  First, a helicopter flied in from nowhere and dropped a ball onto a mound, then flied away.

11歳の女の子が国歌斉唱を行ったのですが (めちゃくちゃうまかった!)、歌が終わるとともに昔の衣装を着た人たちがいっせいに鉄砲を発射! 予想してなかったのでそのすごい音に思わず飛び上がってしまいました。 A 11 year old girl sang the National Anthem (she was very good!), and at the end of the song, these people wearing the old costumes fired their guns.  It was totally unexpected and I was so shocked when  I heard a big sound.

さらにスピナーズのマスコットらしきものも登場。でもこれが何の生き物なのかよくわかりませんでした…。 Then several mascots of Spinners came out and danced, but I couldn't tell what kind of animals these were...

さらになんと私の同僚が抽選で選ばれ始球式の球を投げることに! 残念ながら球はキャッチャーのはるか手前に落ちてしまいましたが、すごくいい思い出になると思います。このほかにも子供達が球場を一周したり、観客も一緒になって楽しめるセレモニーでした。 And, one of my colleagues was selected for the ceremonial first pitch!!  The ball she threw was not as good as it could be, but it would become a very good memory for her!  In addition to these, there were many other events (kids walking around the stadium, etc) before the game, and we all enjoyed the ceremony as we felt we were a part of it.

いよいよ試合が始まったのですが、この頃にはかなり寒くなってきて、上着を持ってくるのを忘れた私達は3回の裏が終わると寒さに耐え切れず、家に帰ることにしました。翌日試合結果を聞くと2－1でスピナーズが勝ったらしいです。もちろんレッドソックスの試合とは規模も野球のレベルも比べものになりませんが、その分チケットはかなり安く、アットホームな雰囲気なので家族で楽しむにはもってこいだと思います。 Finely at ~7:30 pm the game started, but by the time it was very chilly (I forgot to bring my jacket) and I couldn't stand it any longer - so we left after the third inning (next day one of my colleagues told me that Spinners won (2-1) the game).  It was no comparison to a Red Sox game, but tickets are very cheap and the magnetosphere is very relaxed, so it would be a nice summer activity for families.

Harvest Moon

9月12日は中秋の名月。ボストンではお天気がよかったのでこんなにきれいなお月様の写真が取れました。 The beautiful Harvest Moon in the sky on Sep. 12. The weather was very nice in Boston, and we (actually my husband) could take such beautiful pictures.

そういえば今年は月餅を食べなかったな~。 One thing I regret - we didn't eat moon cakes this year...

Baby Shower

今日は友人の Baby Shower のため Salisbury Beach というところまでやって来ました。Baby Shower というのはアメリカの風習で、出産を間近に控えたお母さんを囲んでお祝いするパーティー。参加する人はお祝いの品を持参するのですが、これは祝ってもらうカップルが事前に赤ちゃん用品店などで事前に登録してあるものから予算などに合わせて購入します。私は他の友人2人と一緒にチャイルドシートをゲット。 Today I was invited to my friend's baby shower in Salisbury Beach.

パーティー会場はビーチのすぐそば。デコレーションのテーマもビーチ風です。 The place that the baby shower was held was just by the beach and the room was also decorated with beach themed.

それぞれの席にはクッキーと小さなお土産の品が置いてあります。 At each seat were a cookie and a small treat.

これは生まれてくる赤ちゃんの名前 (Trevor James) の入った M&M のチョコレート。カスタムメイドの M&M があるなんて知りませんでした。 These are the M&M's with the baby's name (Trevor James).  I didn't know you can make your own M&M's!

海の見える窓のそばにはオムツでできた飾りが。オムツもこんな風にするとおしゃれなデコレーションに早変わり。 By the window was a decoration made of diapers! Even diapers can be a nice art piece.

ケーキは3種類もありました。 Three different cakes were offered.

Trevor 君のマスコットは白熊のようで、あちこちに白熊のモチーフがあったのですが、このケーキも白熊の親子の絵が描かれていました。とても手が込んでます。 Little Trevor's mascot is a white bear, and the white bear motif was everywhere.  This cake was also decorated with the paint of a white bear family.  My friend and her family must have spent a lot of time and efforts to organize this party.

こちらはもう少しシンプルでエレガントな感じ。 This one was the simpler and elegant-looking cake.

50人くらい参加者がいたのでお祝いの品数もすごく多い! Trevor 君のお母さんは一つ一つみんなの前で贈り物を開封して見せていました。何しろ数が多いのでかなり時間がかかりました! I believe ~50 attendees were there, so she got so many gifts.  She opened them one by one, which took a quite long time!

贈り物の中で特にかわいかった水兵さんのお洋服。思わず写真を撮ってしまいました。 This was my favorite gift - the sailor's uniform.  It was sooo adorable.

パーティーが終わった後はすぐそばのビーチをお散歩。 After the party, we took a walk at the beach right next to the party room.

Poirot 君は大喜びでビーチを疾走。 Poirot was very excited to run freely.

すごい顔をして必死で走ってました。 What a face!

こんなにアクティブな Poirot 君を見るのは久しぶり。9月になると犬もビーチに入れるので (夏の間は人が多いため、ほとんどのビーチでは犬が来ることは禁じられています) これからはちょくちょくビーチに来ようかな。 I haven't seen him being so active for a while.  From September dogs can get into most beaches, so I should bring him to a beach more often.

Summer Outing to Lowell Spinners Game

今日は私の会社の社内行事でボストン・レッドソックスのマイナーリーグチーム、ローウェル・スピナーズの試合を見に来ました。松坂選手などレッドソックスの選手も調整のため試合に出ることがあるらしいです。 This afternoon, for my company's summer outing, we came to watch the baseball game of Lowell Spinners, which is the minor league baseball affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.

今日の午後から明日にかけて台風のため大雨・強風が予想されています。私たちが家を出たときは大雨だったのですが球場に着いた時にはこの辺りはまだ雨は降っていませんでした。 The hurricane was coming this afternoon and when we left home it was raining so hard in our area but not raining around the stadium.

今回は会社の特別行事なのでお昼ご飯付です。私たちの他にも大グループで来ている人達や、ここで子供のお誕生日会をしている人達もいました。 We got the group tickets that come with All-You-Can Eat BBQ, so we could enjoy the meal before the game started.  There were several other groups as well.

夏はやっぱりとうもろこし! Of course we need to have corn on the cob in summer!!

ホットドッグ。 Hot dogs.

ソーセージ。 Sausages.

フライドチキン。 Fried chickens.

そしてスペアリブ。見事なまでにお肉ばっかりです。サラダも申し訳程度に端っこのほうにちょこっとおかれていましたが、食べている人はほとんどなし。 And spare ribs.  Well, we found only meat...  We also had some salad, but I didn't see many people eating it...

お昼ごはんを食べている間に大雨が。う~ん、今日の試合は中止かな? When we were eating BBQ, it started raining very hard...  We didn't think they would still play in this rain...

球場を覗いてみると、ビニールシートで覆われていました。レッドソックスのフェンウェイ球場と比べるとグラウンドと観覧席がとても近くてかなりアットホームな感じ。 We checked out the stadium but it was covered by the big plastic sheet.

観覧席も屋根などはないのでずぶ濡れ。 The seats are not covered and they were all wet.

一応選手達は試合の準備をしているようでしたが、どうなることやら。 The players were preparing for the game, though...

私達も多分試合は中止だろうと思いながらも公式には中止の発表はされてなかったのでみんなで食べたり飲んだりしながら待っていました。すると選手が来て子供達にサインをし始めました。 Although we knew that the game would be canceled, there was no official announcement so we were just hanging around.  Then one of the players showed up and gave his autographs to kids.

ミーハーな私はこの選手が誰かなどまったく知らなかったのですが、サインをお願いしてみたところ快く書いてもらえました。後で調べたところ、彼は Michael McCarthy という名前のピッチャーでした。がんばって早くレッドソックスでプレーできるようになってほしいです。この後、結局試合は中止となり帰宅しましたが、代わりに来年の試合のチケットをもらえるらしいので楽しみにしておきます。 Although I didn't know who he was, I also asked for his autograph and he kindly gave it to me!  Later I found out that his name is Michael McCarthy (a pitcher).  Hope he can play in a major league soon!  Eventually the game got officially canceled and we went home.  But we will get another tickets for one of the games next year!

deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum

今日は私の会社の部署の親睦会ということで、会社から車で15分くらいの所にある deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum へ行って来ました。ここは広々とした敷地内 (屋外) にたくさんの芸術作品が展示されています。一応室内展示品もありますが、作品数は少ないです。 Today my department at work organized a small outing and went to deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum just 15 min away from work.  In this place, many sculptures are exhibited outside in a quite large space.  There are some art work displayed inside the(small) museum, but not  many.

今日はお天気も良く、外を歩くのには最高の日でした。 We had a perfect weather today to walk around the park.

これは巨大な顔の銅像です。歩いていると急に現れるのでちょっとぎょっとします。 This is the statue of a big head - it suddenly appeared and scared me!!

ペガサス (?) のブロンズ像。 The statue of a pegasus (?).

途中でみんなそれぞれお昼ごはん。室内で食べるとおいしくないサンドイッチも外では幾分おいしく感じるから不思議。 We had the lunch outside - when eating inside, I don't like sandwiches very much but somehow I felt more delicious outside!

この建物の中に室内展示品が飾ってあります。 This is the small museum where some artworks are also exhibited.

美術館のすぐ前にあった人間の指の形の像。どういう意味があるのかは分かりません。 This is the statue of human fingers presented in front of the museum.  I don't know the meaning of this work....

美術館の屋上からは Sandy Pond という池が見渡せます。 From the rooftop of the museum, you can see Sandy Pond.  It was very tranquil and peaceful...

これまた意味不明な作品。これもアートと言えるのでしょうか?? Is this called "art", too??

芝生からにょきっと突き出た人型。かなり大きいです。 A big man sticking out from the ground.

松ぼっくりでできた人形。これって雨が降ったり風が吹いたりしても大丈夫なのかな～。 These people are made of pine cones!!  I wonder if they can survive in the strong rain or wind.

これまた芝生の上に生首。 A head of someone...  Where is the rest of  his body??

2つの巨大なハート。 Two big hearts.

遠くから見ると、とてもかわいかったのですが、近づいてよく見ると、ペンチやらエスプレッソポットなど、何の脈略もないと思われるものがたくさんハートにくっついていました。う～ん、私にはちょっと理解しがたい作品です。このほかにもたくさんの作品があったのですが、夏の間平日は入場無料ということでたくさんの家族連れが訪れていて、子供たちはとっても楽しそうでした。私たちも半日ゆったりすることができて良かったです。 These hearts looked cute from far, but when we got closer, we found so many weird stuff glued to them.  I didn't get it - what is the message that the creator wanted to deliver??  There are many other artworks in the park, and it is free admission on weekdays during summer, so many families were visiting when we were there.  Kids looked really enjoy the park.  We had a great time, too!
