Brunch at Myers + Chang

今日は South End にあるお気に入りのレストランのひとつ、Myers + Chang へブランチを食べにやって来ました。 Today we came for brunch to Myers + Chang, one of our favorite restaurants in South End.

外の席に座ったので Poirot も一緒です。 We sat outside, so Poirot could stay with us.

まず運ばれてきたのはお豆腐とセロリのサラダ。さっぱりしていて今日のような暑い日にはぴったりのお料理。 The first dish was the celery + tofu salad.  Very light and refreshing - perfect dish on a hot day like today.

これは私のお気に入り、グリーンパパイヤのサラダ。これもさっぱりしているのですがピリ辛でナンプラー入りのソースがシャキシャキのグリーンパパイヤとよく合います。 This is one of my favorite dishes, the green papaya slaw.  I love its dressing with fish sauce and some hot peppers - very good with the crunch green papaya.

そして夫のお気に入り、目玉焼きとベーコン入りのベトナム風サンドイッチ。毎回注文してもやっぱりおいしい! And this is my husband's favorite, fried egg banh mi w/sweet soy glazed bacon.  We always order this dish, and it always tastes good!

次々に運ばれてくるお料理を物欲しそうに見つめる Poirot。あなたは残念ながら食べられません。犬用のクッキーあげるから我慢してね。 Poirot was expecting us to give him something but didn't get any - he looked very sad.  Well, nothing you can eat, Poirot!  Instead, I gave him a few doggie cookies.

そしてこれは鴨肉と生姜風味のさくらんぼソースの割包。甘いさくらんぼソースはユニークですが、鴨肉には好相性。 And this is the stuffed bao with duck and gingered cherries.  The gingered cherries were sweet and very unique, but went very well with duck meat.

さらにお茶の葉でスモークされたポークリブも注文。お肉は超柔らかくてお箸でつかむとぽろぽろと骨からはがれます。 We also ordered the tea smoked ribs.  The meat is sooo tender that we could easily remove it from the bones with the chopsticks.

そして最後に運ばれてきたのがサツマイモチップス。これはまあ普通の味でした。でもいつ来てもやっぱりおいしいです。 And lastly came the sweet potato chips + roasted garlic dip.  This was not too special.  But overall, we were very satisfied with their dishes as usual.

食後はいつも行くドッグパークへ。最初は大きな犬しかいなくて私達の所から離れない Poirot。 After the brunch, we went to the nearby dog park.  At first, only big dogs were there and Poirot did not want to stay away from us...

でもしばらくすると2匹のパグちゃんがやって来ました! But soon after, two pugs came to the park!

Poirot は他の犬と遊ぶよりも人間と一緒にいるほうが好きなのですが、パグだけは別。早速3匹で遊び始めます。 Generally Poirot prefers playing with humans to playing with other dogs, but pugs are the exception - he is very interested in other pugs. As soon as thees two pugs came in, Poirot started playing with them.

そこへ元気いっぱいのフレンチブルドッグの赤ちゃん (生後4ヶ月) 登場! Then a very active French bulldog (4 months old) showed up!

この子犬ちゃんはなぜか Poirot が気に入った様で、Poirot にキス攻撃。 I don't know why, but this little puppy liked Poirot and gave him a lot of kisses.

Poirot はどうしていいのかわからず固まってました~。周りの飼い主さんたちはみんな笑ってました。 Poirot didn't know how to handle the puppy, and he was totally frozen~.  Peoples around them were all smiling at them.

Poirot's 4th Birthday

6月7日は Poirot のお誕生日! 今年で4歳になりました! 超巨大 (40 cm 位) な牛 (?) の骨がお誕生日プレゼントです。ちなみにこれは South End にある Polka Dog Bakery というお店で買ってきました。 June 7th is Poirot's birthday!  This year he became 4 years old.  The birthday gift for him this year was this huge (~15 inches) cow (?) bone, which we got from Polka Dog Bakery in South End.

Poirot は興奮して小刻みに震えてましたが、私たちが Happy Birthday の歌を歌っている間おとなしく待ってました。 Poirot got so excited that he started trembling, but he behaved himself and waited quietly until we finished singing "Happy Birthday" song to him.

骨をベランダに持って行き、食べてもいいよといったのですが、ほんとにこんなの食べてもいいの? ってちょと信じられない様子で私の顔をじ～っと見つめます。 I brought the bone to the porch and told him to eat, but it seemed he couldn't believe it was his (I think he thought it was too good to be true), and he was just staring at me...

ほんとに食べていいよと言うと、骨を引きずってベランダの階段を下り、庭で一心不乱に食べ始めました。でもさすがの Poirot にもこれは大きすぎたらしく、しばらくすると疲れたのか家の中に戻ってきました。また明日続きを食べてね~。 I had to tell him several times, but he finally found out it was OK to eat.  Then he dragged the bone down to the backyard and started tackling to it.  However it was too big for even Poirot, and after awhile, he got tired and came back into the house...  Happy Birthday, Poirot, and you can continue to eat it tomorrow~.

Brunch at South End Buttery

今日のブランチは久しぶりに South End Buttery へやって来ました。相変わらず多くの人で賑わってます。 Today we came to South End Buttery for brunch.  The restaurant was very crowded as usual.

私はこの間からずっと食べたかった苺のフレンチトーストを注文。甘さ控えめでおいしかったのですが、ボリュームたっぷりで途中で飽きてきます。 I tried the strawberries & cream brioche French toast, which I had been craving for a while…  It was not too sweet and I liked it, but the portion was too big and I got tired of it halfway through…

夫は卵&ステーキをオーダー。 My husband ordered the steak & eggs.

お肉はちょっと硬め。でもお肉にかかっていたトマティロサルサが辛くて酸っぱくて、私好みの味 (夫は酸っぱいのが嫌いなので文句を言ってましたが)。卵2個にポテト、サラダも付いてこちらもボリュームたっぷりです。 The meat was bit too tough, but I loved the tomatillo salsa which was hot and sour (my husband didn’t like its sourness too much).  With 2 eggs, greens and home fries, he got very full, too.

その後、レストランすぐ近くにあっていつも行くドッグパークに Poirot を連れて行きました。でも今回は大きな犬ばっかりで Poirot の遊び相手になってくれるような犬はこのビーグルだけでした。せっかく来たのに Poirot は私たちにべったりと張り付いて退屈そうだったので早々に退散しました。また今度ね。 After the meal, we went to the nearby dog park which we always go when we are in South End with Poirot.  But this time, we found mostly big dogs there who were not very interested in playing with Poirot…  He played a bit with this beagle dog, but most of the time he stayed with us and looked bored, so we stayed ehre only for a short time and left… Hope we see more small dogs next time…

Poirot and "Doggles"

Poirot の親友、来福君の (人間の) お父さんから犬用のゴーグル、その名も "ドーグル" をもらったので、早速試してみることに! Poirot's best friend, Laifu's (human) father gave him a pair of dog goggles called "doggles".  So we tried them on him!

Poirot は何がなんだかわからないようで、固まって動けなくなってしまいました。 Poirot didn't understand what was going on, and he completely froze until I took them off from him...

でもなかなか似合ってて、かっこいいと思います! But I think they looked very good on him and Poirot looked very cooool!!

Lunch at Captain Carlos

今日は暖かく、お天気も良かったので、家から車で３０分位の所にある Gloucester という アメリカで一番古い港町へやって来ました。お昼ごはんは Captain Carlos で食べることに。 Since it was nice and warm today, we came to Gloucester, the America's oldest seaport (~30 min drive from our home).  First we stopped at Captain Carlos for lunch.

外のデッキにあるテーブルに座りました。そのすぐ横は海です。 We sat at one of the outside tables and right next to us was the ocean.

Poirot はデッキ内には入れないので柵の外に繋いだのですが、柵に掛かっている網をくぐって、こっちに来たそうにしてました。 Poirot was not allowed in the deck, so we tied him outside - but he really wanted to join us.

私は New England clam bake を注文。といってもこのレストランのは伝統的な clam bake ではなく、クラムチャウダー、蛤を蒸したもの、そしてロブスターがセットになったものでした。スープはかなりクリーミーで、たっぷり蛤が入ってました。 I ordered the New England clam bake, but it was not the traditional clam bake and rather, it was the combination of a cup of clam chowder, steamers and a steamed lobster (+ 2 side dishes).  The chowder was very thick and creamy and had lots of clams.

お料理が運ばれてくるといてもたってもいられなくなった Poirot は体を乗り出して舌なめずり。でも残念ながらあなたの食べられるものはありませんから。 Once he saw us eating, Poirot couldn't help trying to get inside the deck - Sorry, Poirot.  We have nothing for you....

そしてこれが蛤を蒸したもの。こちらの人はなんにでも溶かしバターを付けて食べますが、私達はレモン汁だけで頂きました。おいしいのですが砂がたっぷり入ってるので (今まで海辺のレストランで食べた大概の蒸し蛤には砂が入ってました) 食べにくいです。どこのお店でも砂を洗い流す用に、蒸したときに出てくる蛤の汁が小さなボールに入って出てくるのですが、それでもやっぱり砂が残ってしまいます。 And came the steamers.  They were big and tasted not bad, but had lots of sands...  Even rinsing them in the accompanied broth did not help much...

かわいそうな Poirot 君は私達が食べてる間、ず～っとこっちを見てました。 Poor Poirot...  He was staring at us for the entire time we were eating...

そしていよいよロブスターの登場です。ちなみにサイドディッシュも２つ好きなのを選べます (ベイクドポテトとコールスローにしました)。いつものように夫に身を全部取り出してもらって食べました。新鮮でおいしい！ And finally a lobster arrived!  As usual, my husband removed the meat from the shell for me.  It was fresh and nice.

夫はロブスターロールを注文したのですが、これはかなりおいしくない。冷凍したのを解凍して出したんじゃないかというような食感と味でした。残念。 My husband ordered a lobster roll, but this was not good at all - I think it was frozen and thawed.  It was kind of mussy texture and no flavor...  Disappointing.

食後はすぐ近くにある Stage Fort Park でお散歩。 After the lunch, we took a nice walk in the Stage Fort Park.

広々としていて、ほとんど人もいなかったので、Poirot を自由に走らせることができました。大喜びの Poirot はあちこち駆け回っていたのですが、しばらくすると大きな木に向かって一目散に走っていきました。 Not many people were in the park, so we let Poirot run freely.  He was running around very happily for awhile, then suddenly ran toward a big tree very fast.

そして木の陰に入ったとたん、パタンと倒れるように寝転がってしまいました。疲れたから涼しいところで休憩したかったようです。ちゃんとどこが涼しい場所か分かってるんやね~。 And as soon as he got under the shadow of the tree, he laid down and took a rest - he know where the coolest and most comfortable spot was!

ここのビーチは石だらけで靴を履いてても歩くのがちょっと大変。 The beach was very stony and it was difficult to walk even with my shoes on.

でも Poirot はへっちゃらな様子であちこち歩き回ってました。 But Poirot didn't mind it at all and walked around the beach.

ゆっくり歩いていた私をちゃんと待っていてくれる Poirot。優しいね~。

He waited for me as I couldn't walk fast enough on these stones.  He is always so kind to me!

ボートを楽しんでいる人たちもたくさんいました。うらやましい。今日は本当に暖かく、海辺でも半日たっぷり楽しめました。 Many people were enjoying their boats.  So jealous!  I want a boat (or a friend who has a boat), too!  The weather was so nice even at the shore, and we enjoyed spending a half day in the area.

Lunch at Clam Box

今日は約1年ぶりに Ipswich にある Clam Box へ蛤のフライを食べにやって来ました。ボストンからは車で40分ほどなので気軽に来られます。 Today we came to Clam Box in Ipswich, MA, to get some fried clams.  It's been almost a year since we came here last time.  It's only ~40 min drive from Boston.

外でも食べられるのですが、今日は肌寒かったのでお店の中で食べることにしました。入り口付近にある窓口で注文して、自分の番号が呼ばれたら取りに行きます。 Outside tables were also available, but it was chilly today and we decided to eat inside the restaurant.

これが蛤のフライ。スモールを頼んだのですがそれでもかなりたくさん入ってます。身が大きくて、去年食べたものより味が濃くておいしい気がします。多分その日に採れた蛤によって当たり・はずれがあるんでしょうね。 This is the small box of fried clams (but so many clams in there).  Clams were very big, rich in flavors and yummy.  We both thought that this one was better than that we had last year.  Maybe it depends on the quality of clams available on that day.

さらにホタテのフライ＆オニオンリングも注文。 We also had the fried scallop mini-meal (which came with one side and we chose onion rings).

このホタテがまたとってもジューシーで甘くて大満足。オニオンリングもおいしかったのですがさすがに揚げ物ばっかりで最後のほうはちょっと胸焼けがしてきました。 These scallops were very good - big, juicy, tender and sweet.  We loved the onion rings, too, but had too much fried food and got heartburn afterwords...

食後車で辺りをドライブしていると誰もいないビーチがあったので行ってみることに。 After the lunch we drove around the area and found a tiny beach.

でもとても風が強くて寒かったので、ほんの少しだけ Poirot と散歩してすぐに退散しました。また暖かくなったらゆっくり散歩しに来たいと思います。 We walked around a bit, but it was too cold to stay longer at this beach - so we just let Poirot do his business and drove back to Boston.  I would like to come back again when the weather gets warmer...
