Trip to Montreal - Day 3

Today was our last day in Montreal.  Since we wanted to avoid traffic jams, we left for Boston soon after the breakfast.

But I wanted to get some bread at Premiére Moisson inside Marché Atwater that we visited yesterday, we stopped there on the way.

There were so many varieties and it was tough to decide which ones to bring with me, but I got some basic stuff (croissants, baguette, etc) - by the way they were very, very good.

We had to wait in line to go through the passport control at the border, but thankfully we could return to US without any incident.

While driving, we noticed that Simon Pearce was on the way and decided to stop by for late lunch.  It's in Quechee, Vermont, and we visit there once a year or so.

The iced tea and raspberry fizz.

The restaurant is located just by the river, and usually you can enjoy beautiful view, but today ithe weather was not very nice and during our lunch it started raining (the pictures from our last visit are here).

The bread was buttermilk scones and Irish bread, as usual.  I don't really like the Irish bread, but love their scones.

I ordered the quiche with smoked salmon, artichokes, etc.

My husband chose the braised pork shoulder.  The meat was very tender and juicy, but the sauce was sweet and tasted like between ketchup and BBQ sauce which I didn't like.  It was raining hard after the lunch, so we did not walk around and just left for Boston.

On the way, the rain was getting harder and harder and we couldn't see anything.  We drove very slowly for nearly 1 hour and finally passed the storm.  It was very thrilling!  My husband had to concentrate on driving very carefully, and got very tired afterwards...

And finally we stopped at our friends' house to pick up Poirot.  We missed you very much, Poirot!!!

Trip to Montreal - Day 2 (3)

Today’s dinner was at Au Pied de Cochon, which I was very looking forward to visiting.  We walked from our hotel, but at first couldn’t find the restaurant as there is no sign on the building.

Our reservation was at 7 pm, but by the time we arrived, the restaurant was already crowded (in Montreal, like other European countries, people start eating dinner very late).

My husband had the beer called “Pied de Cochon”.

Baguette was of course very tasty.

First, we ordered the foie gras cromesquis.  We were told to wait for 1~2 min, then put whole thing into the mouth.  When I bit it, the creamy, rich flavor of the foie gras bursted into my mouth.  Ohhhh, so gooood! I could eat 5 more.

Next, the zucchini blossoms.  It looked very pretty.

It was naturally sweet and I didn’t have to dip it into the sauce (which came with this dish).

We also ordered the foie gras poutine.  At first we ordered the original portion, but our waitress recommended ordering the half portion; so we followed her recommendation.  This foie gras was amazingly good when eaten together with the gravy sauce and a little bit of cheese.  It was very heavy and rich for sure, but addictive.

The second glass of beer was Cidre du Minot.

I chose “PDC’s Melting Pot” for my main.  It contained a little sample of several pork dishes - boudin noir, sausage, roast pork belly and pork shoulder (I guess) on the bed of mashed potatoes.  The pot did not seem big at a glance, but it would certainly make you very stuffed.

I am not a big fan of boudin noir, so I gave it to my husband.

My husband ordered the “Pied de Cochon”.

It had a huge block of meat (pig foot), and while it was tasty, it was impossible to finish it all.  I think I should have taken a different strategy here – we should have ordered more different kinds of appetizers and fois gras dishes and skip the main dishes (or order only one main dish to share).  Well, next time!

For the dessert, we shared the poached pear with vanilla ice cream.  It was not too sweet at all and very light (which I loved) and although we were already both full, we could finish it.  I don’t think we should frequent this restaurant (unless you don’t mind obesity and heart attack!) but once a year or so, I can indulge myself and order whatever I want without worrying about calories!

Trip to Montreal - Day 2 (2)

We came back to our hotel to store fresh fruits, etc, that we bought at Atwater Market in the refrigerator, and then went out again.  At first, we visited the Underground City, which is the largest underground complex in the world. But we noticed there weren’t many people walking…  On a beautiful day like today, I guess no one wants to be underground.  So we quickly came back to the ground!

This is Saint James United Church.  We found many churches around this area.

We didn’t intend to, but found ourselves at the entrance of China Town.  So we decided to go inside.

China Town itself didn’t seem too big, but we found Chinese sweets called “dragon’s beard candy” we’d never seen in Boston China Town.

Sweet peanut paste was wrapped with very thin threads of sugar.  Its texture was similar to hard cotton candy.

I don’t know who this statue is, but a pigeon was on his head.  Looking closely, you’d notice that his head and shoulders are covered by (lots of) birds’ poop…

We were just wandering aimlessly, and came to the site for Montreal Film Festival.   It appeared to be started two days ago.  This time we didn’t plan to attend, but maybe we can come to the festival next year.

We kept walking slowly enjoying the beautiful city, and eventually came to the old city.

We were exhausted as it was hot and we walked a lot.   So we took a break at a café.

I found the poutine on the menu, and couldn’t resist ordering it.  I knew it had very high calories, but it was addictively good (although there was too much cheese) – ahhh, guilty pleasure!

Trip to Montreal - Day 2 (1)

This morning we woke up late and had the breakfast at the hotel restaurant.

Their food was OK but I liked mini-croissants a lot.

Then we headed to Marché Atwater by the metro.  It is located very close to Lionel Groulx station.

Mostly, butchers, bakeries, cheese shops, etc are inside the building and vegetable/fruit stands are outside.

Vegetables were so colorful.

Their products were displayed very beautifully, which reminded me of the market we visited in France last year.

Eggplants and peppers in many different kinds of shapes/colors.  I felt happy by just looking at these vegetables.

Zucchinis were fashionably presented.

Strawberries from Quebec looked very yummy, so we got a small pack.  We had them at our hotel room, and they were good as expected.

I've never seen this type of cherries, and since they looked beautiful we got one pack as well.  But they were sooooo sour.  Later I found out these were called "sour cherry" and used mostly in desserts.  I love sour stuff, so ate ~10 of them, but even for me they were too sour to eat raw...

This bakery, Premiére Moisson, serves not only bread, but also various desserts, deli food, etc.

Their cakes looked very delicious...  I wish we had this kind of bakery in Boston...

We wanted to get bread and desserts here, but since we had no time (more accurately, no space in our stomachs), we decided to stop by tomorrow morning before we leave for Boston..

After wandering around the market for a quite long time, we had the lunch at the food stands in the market.  This is the seafood stand.

We ordered a lobster roll, but we both agreed that we had better lobsters in Maine.

The other dish we ordered was the shrimp skewers. Shrimps were spiced up and very good.

This steamed pork bun was from the stand that served Singaporean (Malaysian?) food.  It was not bad.  This shop (I guess the name is Satay Brothers) seemed very popular and people were making line to order food.
