Trip to London, UK - Day 4 (1)

今日の朝まずやってきたのは大英博物館！ This morning we came to the British Museum!

膨大な数の貴重な美術品が展示されているのに入場料は無料。イギリス (ロンドンだけ?) の美術館・博物館はほとんどどこも無料なのがうれしいですね! Millions of priceless items are exhibited but the admission is free.  In the UK (only in London?) most of the museums are free which is very generous (although everything else is expensive!).

博物館は20年前に来た時から比べてすっかりきれいに改装されてました。 The museum was totally renovated compared to when I visited last time (20 years ago).

まずはやっぱり古代エジプト美術です。20年前はロゼッタストーンはガラスのケースに入っておらず、ポーンと裸で展示されていて、社会見学の子供達がべたべた触っていたのに衝撃を受けたことを覚えています。え~、ロゼッタストーンに触ったりしていいの??とあの時は本気でびっくりしました。 Most interesting exhibitions are of course the Egyptian antiques.  This is one of the most famous item, Rosetta Stone.  When I visited 20 years ago, Rosetta Stone was not in the glass case - it was just exposed without any protection and I clearly remember that I was very shocked to see many school kids touching the stone.

こちらはアッシリアの人頭有翼牡牛像です。足が5本ある!? This is Colossal winged human-headed bulls from the palace of Sargon II.  This bull has 5 legs!

ラムセス2世の胸像。なかなかイケメンです。 Colossal bust of Ramesses II.  He must have been a good looking king.

有名な、ゲイヤー・アンダーソンの猫。めちゃくちゃ気品があります。 Famous "Gayer-Anderson's Cat".  This cat looked very noble.

これは美術品というよりは御遺体では? Well, this is the mummy...

こちらは猫のミイラ。古代エジプトでは猫は神の化身と信じられていたんですね。人間並みにとても丁寧に埋葬されていたことがよく分かります。 These are the cat mummies.  In the ancient Egypt cats were closely connected to a number of gods and goddesses, and they were considered to be demi-gods.  You can clearly see from these mummies that ancient Egyptians were really devoted to cats - they were mummified in a same was as humans...

牛のミイラもあります。布の上に描いてある顔が何ともいえずかわいい。 This is the cow mommy.  It looked cute with the big eyes drawn on the cloth.

こちらは布で巻かれた人間のミイラ。多分高貴な身分の人だったんでしょうね。 This one is the human mummy wrapped with the cloth.

布で巻かれたミイラはこのように美しく装飾された棺に納められます。 The beautifully decorated coffin in which a mummy was placed.

ギリシャ、ローマ美術の展示室まで来た頃には結構疲れてきて、割とさらっと流してしまったのですがそれでも結構面白いものがあって思わず見入ってしまうものもありました。この人は体操選手も真っ青のすごい格好でワニの上に乗っています。ワニの尻尾も垂直に立ってます。これにはどんな意味があるのでしょうか?? We spent too much time in the ancient Egyptian section, and by the time we came to the Greek / Roman section, we were already a bit tired and we couldn't focus on each item as much....  But we still found many interesting exhibitions such as this one.  This man must have been a gymnast!  What is the meaning of this statue?

この小さい石の像もユーモラスで、うちの庭に飾っておきたいくらい。 These small figures are very humorous as well - I want them in my front yard!

蛸焼き器発見! こういう生活に密着した展示品を見ると、大昔の人たちも笑ったり悩んだりしながら今とあんまり変わらない毎日を送ってたんだろうな~と親しみがわいてきます。 I love to see something "ordinal" people were using (like these kitchen stuff) and imagine ancient people lived every day, just like us.

来年のロンドンオリンピックのメダルも展示してありました。 The medals for London Olympic in 2012 were already shown as well.

一つ一つじっくり見てたらいつのまにかすごく時間が経っていて、さすがに足が痛くなってきておなかもすいたので博物館の中にあるレストランで休憩を兼ねてお昼ご飯を食べることにしました 。 We spent a lot of time and were getting tired and hungry, so we decided to take a break and eat lunch at the restaurant inside the museum.

夫はイギリスのビールを頼んだのですが苦くていまいちだったそうです。 My husband ordered the British beer, but it was too bitter for him and he didn't like it...

美術館内のレストランにしてはフォーマルな感じ (値段も)。 This restaurant was relatively formal (considering being inside the museum).

夫はビーツのリゾットを注文。ビーツのピンク色がきれいで味もまあまあ。 My husband ordered the beet risotto.  The rice was beautifully colored (by beets) and the taste was not bad, either.

私はチキンティカマサラ。お茄子のカレーもついてきました。メインのチキンよりもお茄子の方がおいしかった! 食後はまたうろうろと館内を見て回り、全部で5時間以上過ごしましたがまだまだ無限に展示品があって、全然時間が足りませんでした。 I ordered the chicken tikka masala, which came with the eggplant curry and rice.  I liked the eggplant dish more than the chicken...  After the lunch we checked out other exhibition and spent more than 5 hours in total.  But we could see only small parts of the exhibition and would need much more time to see the (almost) unlimited number of collections.

Trip to London, UK - Day 3 (2)

ロンドン塔を後にし、疲れた足を引きずりながら ゴーリングホテルまで何とかたどり着きました。ここはキャサリン王妃が4月の結婚式の前日に独身最後の一夜を過ごしたホテルです。今日はここでアフタヌーンティーを頂きます。 We left the Tower of London for the Goring Hotel where we had a reservation for the afternoon tea.  Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge with her immediate family spent the night before the Royal Wedding at this hotel.

受付で予約がある旨告げると、黄色を基調とした部屋へ案内されました。私たちの席は窓側で中庭の景色を楽しめます。 The hostess at the reception brought us to this room.  Our table was by the window and we could see the small courtyard from our seat.

ティーカップのソーサーには男性の絵が描かれています。多分ホテルの創設者、ゴーリングさんだと思います。 On the saucer, a profile of a gentleman was drawn. I guess this is Otto Richard Goring who established this hotel.

私はゴーリングスペシャルブレンドのお茶を注文。う~ん、いい香り。夫はダージリンにしたのですが、あまり好みの味ではなかったようで、私のお茶の方がおいしいといってました。 For tea, I ordered the Goring special blend which was very good – very mild taste but fragrant. My husband chose Darjeeling, but he didn’t like it too much.  He said mine was better (of course I always choose the best one. Haha!).

まず最初にロブスターの前菜が出てきました。おいしい～。 At first the lobster appetizer was served - yum!

そしてお待ちかね、3段トレイが出てきました！写真ではあまり良く伝わりませんが、とってもきれい！ちなみに全部食べ放題です。 And finally, the three layered tea stand came!!  I doesn't look so in the picture, but it was very beautiful.  By the way, these are all-you-can-eat (our server kept asking us if we needed more sandwiches, cakes, etc).

まずはサンドイッチから食べ始めます。種類は卵、サーモン、チキン、ザリガニの4種類。どれもおいしかったですが卵とサーモンが私のお気に入り。 We started from the sandwiches (egg salad, smoked salmon, chicken and crayfish).  Everything was tasty but my favorite was the egg salad and salmon.

サンドイッチを片付けた後は真ん中のトレイにあるスコーンに取り掛かります。デボンシャーのクロッテッドクリームと苺ジャムを付けて食べるとおいしい～。アメリカで食べる甘くてこってりしたスコーンとは大違いです。 After the sandwiches, we moved on to the scones. With Devonshire clotted cream and strawberry jam, it was very good – not too dry and not too sweet.

スコーンを1つ食べ終わった時点でかなり満腹になってしまったので、残りのスコーンには手をつけず、三段目のケーキ類に移ります。 After eating one scone, I got very full (neither of us could eat two scones – too much!), but still tried the small cakes on the top tray.

ケーキ類はまあまあ。どれもかなり甘いです。やっぱりフランスのケーキの方がおいしいかも。 The cakes were not too impressive.  They were too sweet for me.  I prefer French desserts…

最後にトライフルが出てきました。もうすでにおなかがはちきれそうにいっぱいだったのですが、食べないともったいないのでがんばって食べました。でも豪華な雰囲気の中3時間近くゆったりした時間をすごせて満足。 At the end, we got the trifle in a small glass.  By the time I was over-stuffed, but I didn’t want to regret later and ate it!  We spent almost 3 hours in a very gorgeous setting – it was very relaxing and satisfying.

だいぶ足の疲れも取れたのでその後ハロッズまで行ってお土産を買うことにしました。 Then, we headed to Harrods to buy some souvenirs.

ライトアップされてきれいです。 The building was illuminated and very beautiful…

ショーウィンドーの飾りつけもすごく豪華で、見てるだけで楽しい! Each display window was also beautifully decorated and it was lots of fun to just look at it.

何階か忘れましたが上のほうの階にあるハロッズグッズを売っている売り場へやって来るとハロッズのテディーベアーの巨大バージョンがたくさん通路に並んでました。一番のお気に入りはこのキルトを着た熊さん。 On the higher floor (I forgot which floor) was the section where various Harrods items (bags with the Harrods logo, etc) were being sold.  There, we found many huge Harrods Teddy bears in different costumes.  This one is my favorite.

これはおまわりさんでしょうか？ Is this a police man?

ハロッズグッズの売り場はすっかりクリスマス仕様。 All the decorations were in the Christmas mode.

こんなところにキティーちゃん発見！さすがキティーちゃん、世界を股に駆ける大活躍！ Oh, Hello Kitty in Harrods!  She is very active and travels all over the world!

お土産をいくつか買った後１階にある食料品売り場をぶらぶら歩いていると飲茶のカウンターを見つけました。ちょっと小腹がすいていたので、ここで食べてみることにしました。席に付いて飲み物を頼み、メニューを見てびっくり！めちゃくちゃ高い！４~５品注文するつもりだったのですが２品だけにしておきました。 After we bought some souvenirs we came down to the ground floor (Food Hall) and found the counter where dim sum was served.  By then we were a bit hungry and decided to try some dishes.  After sitting down and ordering drinks, we looked at the menu and OMG, it was sooo expensive!  I originally wanted to order 4~5 dishes, but ended up with 2.

一つ目はワンタンスープ。小さいお椀に海老と豚肉入りのワンタンが3つ。これで £8！ The first dish was the wanton soup - in a small ball, three wantons were swimming.  This dish was £8 (~$13)!

小龍包もたった3つで £8。しかもあんまりおいしくないし~。今まで食べた中で一番高い飲茶かも。まあハロッズの中にあるのでしょうがないのかもしれませんが、なんかすごく損した気分...。 And three xiaolongbaos cost us £8 as well!!  And worse, they were not very tasty..  This was the most expensive dim sum that I’d ever had…  I understand it is Harrods, not a restaurant in China Town, but still….

Trip to London, UK - Day 3 (1)

今日は朝からロンドン塔の見学に行ってきました。20年前に来たときは一般公開されてなくて塔の前で写真を撮ったのをかすかに覚えています。 This morning we came to visit the Tower of London.  It was not open to public when I visited London nearly 20 years ago and I remember I took pictures of the buildings from outside.

ロンドン塔の入り口から見えるユニークな建物はロンドン市庁舎。なんともいえないユニークなデザイン。 From the entrance of the tower, you can see London City Hall.  It's a very unique design.

30分おきにヨーマン・ウォーダー (ロンドン塔の衛兵) による無料のガイドツアーがあります。無料なので私達ももちろん参加します。 A Yeoman Warder guided tour is offered every 30 min (for free).  Since it’s free, of course we joined the tour.

私達のガイドをしてくれたのはこの人。冗談をいっぱい言って笑わしてもらいましたが、歴史なども学べて無料の割には有益なツアーでした。 He is the Yeoman Warder who guided out tour.  He made us laugh a lot with jokes, but also told us lots of history and interesting stories.  It was a very good experience.

ガイドさんの話を聴きながらふと上を見上げると、塔の上になんと弓矢を持った人が誰かを狙っている! I happened to look up when our guide was talking, then found a guy aiming at someone with a bow and arrow!!

敷地内にはたくさんの塔があって、そのほとんどに入ることができます。中には色々な展示品があるのでじっくり見ていくとすごく時間がかかります。 There are many towers most of which are open for public.  Inside the towers are various exhibits.  We spent quite a lot of time looking at each interesting piece.

これも展示品のひとつで徳川秀忠からジェームズ王に送られた鎧です。徳川家康のものだったそうです。 This armor is one of the exhibits, a gift from Tokugawa Hidetada, Shougun of Japan, to King James.

この建物の中には豪華な宝石で飾られた王冠や指輪、剣、その他の装飾品が展示されています (写真撮影不可)。世界最大のダイヤモンド "偉大なアフリカの星" があるのもここです。本物とは信じられないくらい巨大です。 In this building, the great working collection of Crown Jewels in the world and priceless symbols of British monarchy are exhibited (pictures not allowed).  The First Star of Africa, the largest cut diamond in the world mounted at the top of the Sovereign's Sceptre is also stored here.  This diamond is too big to believe it is real!!

建物の前には衛兵さんが身じろぎもせず立っていました。いつも思うのですが、この仕事って本当に大変そう。くしゃみとかしたくなったらどうするんやろ。 In front of the building a guard was standing without moving at all...  I think this is one of the toughest jobs...  What are you supposed to do if you feel like sneezing or something...

ヨーロッパなどの古い建物にあるガーゴイルを写真に撮るのが趣味なのですが、このガーゴイルもなかなかユニークな顔。 I like to take pictures of gargoyles on old buildings in Europe.  This one is very humorous, too.

この建物の中にはロンドン塔に囚われた人たちの拷問に使われた器具などが展示してあります。 In this building, the instruments used to torture prisnors in the Tower of London are exhibited.

これは Scavenger’s daughter という拷問用の器具。たぶん膝を折って座っている人を締め付ける器具だと思いますが、痛そ～。 This is one of the torture instruments, which is called “Scavenger’s daughter”.  The prisoner’s body is folded and almost crushed by iron bows tightened by a torturer.  Looks so painful~.

こちらは手首をくくり付けてはり付けついうか吊り下げるための器具。恐ろしや~。 This is another one called “manacles” which are iron handcuffs fastened around a victim’s wrists, from which he could be hung with his feet off the floor.  Scary....

ロンドン塔には1200年代から約600年間もの間、ライオンや猿、像、北極熊などの動物が飼われていたそうです。それにちなんでか、色々な動物の彫刻があちこちに展示してありました。 Founded during the reign of King John in the early 1200s, exotic animals(lions, polar bears and elephants, tigers, etc) lived at the Tower for over 600 years.  Maybe because of this fact, sculptures of various animals are everywhere in the Tower.

これは敷地内のお土産物屋さんで売っていた鎧。買う人いるのかな? This armor was sold at the gift shop – I wonder who would buy such a thing…

出口を出ると目の前にはすぐタワーブリッジがあります。本当は橋の上を歩きたかったのですが、この時点ですでに半日過ぎていて、連日の歩き疲れのため足が棒のようになってしまい、行くのをあきらめました。この後はアフタヌーンティーを楽しむため次の目的地、Goring Hotel へ移動しました。続きはまた後で~。 At the exit, you can see the Tower Bridge very clearly.  Originally we planed to visit the bridge, but we spent almost 4 hours in the tower and were too exhausted to walk to the bridge.  So we gave up and headed to the next place, Goring Hotel, for the afternoon tea.
