Trip to Taiwan-Japan Day 4 (1)(台中 (Taichun) 一泊旅行)

From Taipei, it takes only ~2 hour by car to Taichun.  This time, we stayed one night at a hotel with hot springs in the suburb of Taichun.  In Taiwan, like in Japan, there are many hot springs.  Before checking in to the hotel, we had lunch (and tea) at Chun Shui Tang, a famous tea shop.

They have now many shops across Taiwan, but this one is the original one.

Milk tea in a huge glass.  This is sooooooo good.  We always get this tea when we come to Taiwan (mostly in Taipei, though).

They also serves various small dishes.

Since each dish is small, we can enjoy many different ones.

Squid balls (fried balls of ground squid).

Everything was very tasty~.

After tea/lunch, we walked around the area, and my husband found a tiny diner where typical Taiwanese home-style dishes, and he insisted to eat again here.  This is the chicken and onion rice.

He also ordered a fish dish.  But according to him, it was so so (I did not eat).

Then, we walked to 無為草堂 (I don't know hot to call it in English) another tea house that we both love.  All we did in Taiwan is to eat!

This tea house has a Kapanese style gardens and romms with tatami (Japanese flooring).  It is very tranquil.

First, you need to choose which kind of tea you'd like.  Then a tea set along with boiling water in a kettle (the kettle is kept boiling on charcoal by your table) will be served.

If you don't know how to prepare tea (there is a specific procedure), your waitress will teach you.

Small sweets are also available.  This is the fresh green mango.

Balls made of purple yam.

A steamed cake made of brown sugar.

Sticky rice cakes (sweet red bean paste inside).

In the pond in the garden, there are many carp.

You can feed carp, too (they give you feed for free).  We felt so relaxed here - I want to sit here forever...

Trip to Taiwan-Japan Day 3 (台北 (Taipei))

Today's lunch was at my favorite restaurant, Dintaifung!!  This was the small appetizer dish.

Of course, xiaolongbao.

Shrimp wanton soup.

Shrimp fried rice.  I love their fried rice.  This was also my parents' and sister's family's favorite dish when they visited here.

Pork and glutinous rice shao-mai.  Maybe we should have skipped this one (glutinous rice filled up our stomach quickly).

This is the crab meat xiaolonbao.  Ohhh, so gooood!!  We ate too much!!

But, right after this big lunch, we had the dessert!  Shaved ice with fruits, sticky rice balls, etc.

Then we went back to my husband's house and took a nap (we still had jet lag).  We woke up at night and went to Shilin Night Market.  These are huge fried chicken at Hot-Star restaurant.  It is very popular and always many people are waiting in line.  We love it, too!

Grilled chicken (similar to Japanese yaki-tori).

Aiyu.  This is jelly made of seeds of a fruit (I don't know the English name; it's the fig family).  This jelly cools you down, and is very suitable in hot Taiwan.

Squid and bamboo shoot stew.  I love this dish, too.

Oyster omelet.

Very colorful (and cheap) tropical fruits.

Candy apples, candy strawberries and candy tomatoes.

Fried shrimp.  I did not eat this one and I still regret. I will definitely try this one next time!

Ugly macarons.

Corn dogs with different flavors.

Trip to Taiwan-Japan Day 2 (台北 (Taipei))

Today we went for lunch to a restaurant called 萬珍樓 (no English name.. see the map below) with my husband's family (11 people).  We ordered the 10-course menu.  This was the appetizer (cabbage salad with bamboo shoot, peanuts, etc).  Surprisingly good.

Pork belly stew.  The meat was sooo tender and it melted in the mouth.

Steamed squid.  This was also very tender.

Peking duck.  I am not a big fan of duck meat, so I kept eating the skin.  This skin was very crispy and good!

Shrimp with mayonnaise sauce.  It was a little too heavy to my taste.

Sweet and sour whole fish.

Beef dish.  Not bad.

Fried cabbage.

Clam and luffa stew.  In addition to all these dishes, the soup (made from the duck bones which was leftover from our Peking duck dish).  We were too full and couldn't finish it.  We also ordered xiaolongbao, beer, juice, etc, but it was only ~$150 total.

After lunch, my husband I walked around the city, and got some traditional Taiwanese sweets.

Trip to Taiwan-Japan Day 1 (Boston - 台北 (Taipei))

Leaving for Taiwan and Japan to see our family (my husband's in Taipei and mine in Kyoto)!  My husband was already in Taipei (he left one week earlier), so I had to fly alone.

Flew with Delta from Boston to Detroit, then to Tokyo (Narita) and finally to Taipei.

I arrived at Taipei at ~10 pm.  My husband came to pick me up and went to a porridge restaurant (see the map below).  This restaurant is not the cleanest restaurant in the world, but I really love their food.

Some kind of green vegetable.

Squid, fried fish and cucumber pickles.

And all you can eat porridge.  When I eat here, I feel that I am in Taiwan.
