Dinner at Gracie's (Providence, RI)

プロヴィデンスでの夕食は Gracie's というレストランで。 For the dinner, we came to Gracie's in Providence.

夫は最近なぜかどこに行ってもビールを頼むようになりました。 I don't know why, but these days my husband only orders beer...

ここのパンはバゲットは普通でしたが、オリーブ入りのとオニオン入りのフォカッチャがとってもおいしかったです。 The baguette was just OK, but I loved their focaccia (2 different kinds - with olives and with onions).

アミューズはビーツ。三色の異なる種類のビーツが使ってあってとってもきれい。上に乗ってるのが私の嫌いなヤギのチーズだったのが残念ですが、ビーツは甘くておいしく、これから出てくるお料理も期待できそうな予感。 The amuse bouche was the beets with goat cheese.  Three different colors of beets were used and it looked very beautiful.  This dish increased our expectations for their menu.

夫の前菜はエアルームトマトのサラダ。紫色や黄色のトマトは見た目もきれいで甘みがあって夏ならではのサラダです。  My husband ordered "roof top heirloom tomato salad". The tomatoes were sweet and fresh.

私は蛸のサラダ。蛸は柔らかく、自家製のチョリソーの塩味とよくマッチしてこれもすごくおいしい! I ordered "charred octopus salad".  The octopus was tender and went very well with the salty house-made chorizo.

ここでお口直しにメロンのシャーベット。コース料理だとお口直しのシャーベットが出てくることもありますが、アラカルトで頼んでも出してもらえるなんてちょっと感激。 After the first course, the melon sorbet was served to cleanse our palate.  I had experiences with this kind of refreshment when we ordered course menus, but don't think many restaurants serve it for a la carte.

夫のメインは地元で捕れたスズキ。盛り付けが立体的。お魚の身はとても分厚かったのですが、中まででちゃんと火は通っているのにすごくジューシーで完璧に焼きあがってました。 My husband ordered local sea bass.  It was beautifully presented.  The fish meat was very thick, but was cooked perfectly - very moist inside.

私には珍しく、ベジタリアンのお料理を選んでみました。3種類のお料理が少しずつ出てきました。 Unlike usual, I ordered the vegetarian menu.  Three different kinds of dishes were served.

これはラタトゥユ入りのパスタ。野菜だけとは思えないこくのある味わいです。 This is ratatouille pasta.  I couldn't believe this was vegetarian.  It was surprisingly good.

これはお茄子のペーストと、お茄子のフライ (正式な名前は教えてもらったのですが忘れてしまいました。)。 This is the eggplant dish (I forgot its name).

そしてこちらはメロンとスイカを圧縮したもの。多分真空圧縮したんだと思いますが、甘味が凝縮されてすごくおいしい! 今までベジタリアン料理は物足りないと思って注文することはめったになかったのですが、これはおいしくてボリュームもあり大満足。 And this one is "compressed" watermelons and cantaloupes.  I believe they were vacuum compressed, but that process made the fruits very sweet.  I loved all three dishes - they were very satisfying.

デザートは夏のフルーツ盛り合わせを2人でシェア。色とりどりのフルーツのしたにはレモンカスタードが入っています。バジルのアイスクリームも甘さ控えめで、とっても気に入りました。 For the dessert, we shared "local summer fruit" with lemon curd and basil ice cream.  Again, it was served beautifully and tasted very good.

最後にエスプレッソのマカロン。ここはボストンのレストランにも引けを取らない (というか大概のレストランの上を行っている) 位に前菜からデザートまで全ておいしく、その割りにお値段はリーズナブルなのでボストンから足を伸ばす価値ありです。 And lastly, espresso macarons.  I think this restaurant is as good as ones in Boston (actually, better than most ones) - from appetizers to dessert, everything was very well executed but the price was reasonable.  It is worth coming here from Boston.

これがレストランの入り口。このレストランは星がテーマのようであちこちに星の飾りが施されていました。また近いうちにぜひ訪れたいです。 This is the entrance to the restaurant.  Their theme appears to be "stars" and star motifs were everywhere in the restaurant.

Providence and Bristol in Rhode Island

今日は午前中、Wrentham というところにあるアウトレットへお買い物に行ってきました。マサチューセッツ州ですが、ボストンの南にあってロードアイランド州にも近いので、お買い物の後行ってみる予定です。でもその前にまずお昼ご飯。 Today we came to Wrentham Outlet for shopping.  It is located in Massachusetts, but is south of Boston and close to Rhode Island, so we were planning to visit there after shopping.  But before that, we had to have lunch!

ここのアウトレットにはいいレストランがないのでしょうがなく Ruby Tuesday というファミレスへ。席に着くと、頼んでもいないのにチーズビスケットが運ばれてきました。どうもサービスでくれるようです。今まではこんなサービスなかったのに。 This outlet does not have good restaurants, so we  went to Ruby Tuesday (reluctantly).  When we sat at the table, our waitress gave us two cheese biscuits although we did not order them - it was apparently free (people at other tables also got them).  This was the first time we got this kind of service at this restaurant.

私は食べ放題のサラダを注文。 I ordered "All-You-Can-Eat" salad.

Poirot 君もおすそ分けが欲しくてこっちをじーっと見つめています。 As usual, Poirot was staring at me, hoping to get something...

夫はシーフードセット。サーモン、海老、クラブケーキにピラフと野菜が付いてきます。 My husband ordered the seafood trio, which came with salmon, shrimp, crab cake, rice and vegetables.

Poirot はフェンスに顔を押し付けてちょっとでも食べ物に近づこうと必死です。 Poirot pushed his face to the fence, trying desperately to get close to our food....

お買い物の後、ハイウェイ I-95 を南下して、ロードアイランド州のプロヴィデンスへやって来ました。道路わきに開きスポットがあったので車を止めようと思ったら、駐車禁止の標識が。よく見ると、プロヴィデンス市長のためのスポットのよう。 After the shopping, we drove to Providence, RI.  We found a parking spot on the street and tried to park our car, but then noticed the "no parking" sign - because the spot is reserved for Mayor!

何で市長用のスポットがあるん?と不思議に思ったら、すぐ側の建物が市庁舎でした。市長は毎日ここに車を止めてるんですかね。 I was wondering why Mayor needed a parking spot here, then realized the building by the spot was City Hall.  Does Mayor park his (or her?) car here every day??

実はプロヴィデンスには初めて来たのですが、特に見るものもなく、ちょっとがっかり。市内のレストランで夕食を予約してあったのですが、予約時間までまだ結構時間があるのにどうしよう。 This was the first time for me to visit Providence and I was expecting a lot to see, but actually not many interesting things...  But since we had a reservation at a restaurant in Providence this evening, we had several hours to kill...

そこで適当に車を走らせていると、海辺にたどり着きました。ブリストールという小さな町です。 So we decided to drive around aimlessly and eventually came to a small town called Bristol.

海辺にあったドーナツ屋さん。 By the sea, we found a donuts shop.

このドーナツ屋さんにはなんと24種類もの味のソフトクリームもあるようです。ちなみにソフトクリームはアメリカではソフトサーブといいます。ソフトクリームといっても通じません。 This donuts shop served 24 different flavors of soft serve.

24種類のどれにしようか悩んだ挙句、メープルナッツという味のにしました。メープルシロップの味がしっかりしていてなかなかおいしい！ It took me a long time to decide which flavor, but eventually ordered the maplenut flavor.  It was not bad.

ちっちゃな漁船がありました。このあたりでは何が採れるのでしょうか。 A small fishing boat.  I wonder what kind of fish are caught around here.

もう9月からなのか、人影もまばらで寂しい感じ。風も強くて肌寒いし、ほんと、もう夏は終わったんだな～という感じ。 Maybe because it was already September, there were not many people walking...  It was a bit windy and chilly and felt summer was gone...

歩き疲れたのか、しんどそうな Poirot 君。 Poirot looked tired after the long walk.

カメラの方向いて~とお願いしたら、横目でチラッと見てくれました。この後しばらくうろうろと歩き回り、またプロヴィデンスまで夕食を食べに戻りました。夕食の様子は続きで。

I asked him to look at the camera, and he just gave a quick glance.  We continued to walk then went back to Providence for our dinner (will be reported in the next post).

Dinner at Sushi Island

今日はかなり久しぶりに家から車で15分くらいのところにある Sushi Island へやって来ました。日本人の方が作るお寿司なので安心です。 Tonight we came to Sushi Island.  It's been a long time since we came here last time.  The chef who makes sushi is Japanese, so I can trust.

夫のグラスにビールを注いだのですが泡ばっかりだと笑われてしまいました (写真右側のグラス)。こちらでは人にお酌をすることはほとんどないのでビールを上手くグラスに注ぐなんてできなくなってしまいました。 I poured the beer to my husband's glass (right one in the pic), and he made fun of me since I gave him a lot of foam.  I am not good at pouring it nicely...

バイ貝の壷焼き。こりこりしておいしい！  Grilled sea snail on the shell.  It was crunchy and tasty.

あん肝。濃厚です。 Steamed monkfish liver with ponzu sauce.  Very creamy and rich.

キスの天ぷら。写真を撮る前に一切れ食べてしまいました。 Fried (tempura) whiting fillets.

茶碗蒸しを頼むときれいな器に入って出てきました。 I ordered the steamed eggs in broth, and it was served in this beautiful container.

ちょっと卵が固め。もうちょっとお出汁の割合を多くしたとろとろのが好みなんだけど。 The eggs were too hard for me (I prefer more broth), but not bad.

今日のお勧めのネタから注文したお寿司。 We ordered several kinds of sushi (mostly from "Today's Special").

銀鱈の炙り。脂が乗っていておいしいです。 Seared sable fish.  It was fatty and good!

ピリ辛蛸の軍艦巻き。 Spicy octopus.

焼きつぶ貝。 Grilled conch.

ボタン海老。 Jumbo sweet shrimp.  It was very sweet.

頭の部分は唐揚げにして出してくれました。 The chef fried the head of sweet shrimp and gave it to us.  I don't think American people eat shrimp head, but actually it is very good and I love it.

さらに鉄火巻きと梅紫蘇巻き。 Two kinds of rolls (tuna and sour plum paste/cucumber).

デザートにお餅でくるまれたアイスクリーム。そんなに食べたつもりはなかったのですが結構高くついてちょっとびっくり。まあどれもおいしくて満足したのでいいんですけどね。でももうちょっとお値段抑え目だともっとしょっちゅう来られるんだけどな~。 And for dessert, we shared the mochi ice cream.  I didn't think we ordered a lot, but it was more expensive than I expected.  It was OK as we liked the dishes, but if their price is a bit lower, we could come here more often...

Summer Outing to Lowell Spinners Game

今日は私の会社の社内行事でボストン・レッドソックスのマイナーリーグチーム、ローウェル・スピナーズの試合を見に来ました。松坂選手などレッドソックスの選手も調整のため試合に出ることがあるらしいです。 This afternoon, for my company's summer outing, we came to watch the baseball game of Lowell Spinners, which is the minor league baseball affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.

今日の午後から明日にかけて台風のため大雨・強風が予想されています。私たちが家を出たときは大雨だったのですが球場に着いた時にはこの辺りはまだ雨は降っていませんでした。 The hurricane was coming this afternoon and when we left home it was raining so hard in our area but not raining around the stadium.

今回は会社の特別行事なのでお昼ご飯付です。私たちの他にも大グループで来ている人達や、ここで子供のお誕生日会をしている人達もいました。 We got the group tickets that come with All-You-Can Eat BBQ, so we could enjoy the meal before the game started.  There were several other groups as well.

夏はやっぱりとうもろこし! Of course we need to have corn on the cob in summer!!

ホットドッグ。 Hot dogs.

ソーセージ。 Sausages.

フライドチキン。 Fried chickens.

そしてスペアリブ。見事なまでにお肉ばっかりです。サラダも申し訳程度に端っこのほうにちょこっとおかれていましたが、食べている人はほとんどなし。 And spare ribs.  Well, we found only meat...  We also had some salad, but I didn't see many people eating it...

お昼ごはんを食べている間に大雨が。う~ん、今日の試合は中止かな? When we were eating BBQ, it started raining very hard...  We didn't think they would still play in this rain...

球場を覗いてみると、ビニールシートで覆われていました。レッドソックスのフェンウェイ球場と比べるとグラウンドと観覧席がとても近くてかなりアットホームな感じ。 We checked out the stadium but it was covered by the big plastic sheet.

観覧席も屋根などはないのでずぶ濡れ。 The seats are not covered and they were all wet.

一応選手達は試合の準備をしているようでしたが、どうなることやら。 The players were preparing for the game, though...

私達も多分試合は中止だろうと思いながらも公式には中止の発表はされてなかったのでみんなで食べたり飲んだりしながら待っていました。すると選手が来て子供達にサインをし始めました。 Although we knew that the game would be canceled, there was no official announcement so we were just hanging around.  Then one of the players showed up and gave his autographs to kids.

ミーハーな私はこの選手が誰かなどまったく知らなかったのですが、サインをお願いしてみたところ快く書いてもらえました。後で調べたところ、彼は Michael McCarthy という名前のピッチャーでした。がんばって早くレッドソックスでプレーできるようになってほしいです。この後、結局試合は中止となり帰宅しましたが、代わりに来年の試合のチケットをもらえるらしいので楽しみにしておきます。 Although I didn't know who he was, I also asked for his autograph and he kindly gave it to me!  Later I found out that his name is Michael McCarthy (a pitcher).  Hope he can play in a major league soon!  Eventually the game got officially canceled and we went home.  But we will get another tickets for one of the games next year!
