Brunch at East by Northeast

今日はケンブリッジにある East by Northeast へブランチを食べに来ました。以前一度夕食に来たことがあるのですが、夫があまり気に入らなかったのでそれ以来訪れてなかったのですが、ブランチなら大丈夫かなということで今回再挑戦してみました。 Today we came to East by Northeast inCambridge for brunch.  We visited here once for dinner a long time ago, but my husband didn't like it very much and hadn't come back since..  But I thought the brunch would be a low risk, so we gave it a try again.

まずは葱油餅のサンドイッチ。目玉焼きと自家製のハムが挟まってます。これはなかなかおいしいかも。ソースは胡椒が効いていて、サンドイッチによく合ってました。 First we ordered the scallion pancake sandwich with a fried egg, house cured ham and peppercorn sauce - I liked this dish a lot.  The sauce was a bit spicy and matched well with the sandwich.

これは饅頭のクルトンにポークのグレービーソースをかけたもの。ポーチドエッグも乗ってます。メニューには芽キャベツが付いてくるとあったのですが、出てきたのは海苔みたいな海藻でした。これは普通のクルトンと変わらない感じで、期待してたものとちょっと違いました。 This is the creamy pork gravy, mantou bread croutons, and a poached egg.  It was different than what I expected - the croutons were just like normal croutons (I couldn't tell they were made from mantou bread).

お次は豚肉、海老、玉葱入りの焼売。 焼売 自体は特別おいしくはありませんでしたが、にんじんのソースがちょっぴり甘くておいしい。 Then we ordered the pork, shrimp, and spring onion shaomai with carrot ginger puree and black vinegar reduction.  The shaomai itself was nothing special but I liked the carrot puree (slightly sweet) a lot.

最後にもうひとつ、厚切り麺を注文。エリンギ、コールラビという野菜、そしてポーチドエッグが入ってます。これも麺自体は普通でしたがスープとエリンギがおいしかったです。 Thick-cut noodles with grilled king oyster mushrooms, poached egg, kohlrabi and poached egg in spiced vegetable broth.  The noodles were just OK (I prefer more chewy texture), the mushroom was nicely charred and the broth was tasty.

食後に胡麻をまぶしたキャラメルが出てきました。やっぱり夫にとってはいまいちだったよう。彼にとっては中華料理というイメージがどうしても抜けないので、その割に値段が高めと言うことも気に入らない理由の一つのようです 。でもいい素材を使って全部手作りでやっているのでしょうがないとは思うんですけどね。 After the meal caramels coated with sesames were served.  My husband still didn't like it very much.  One of the reasons could be relatively high prices (to him, this is the Chinese/Taiwanese restaurant and he couldn't help but comparing it to real Chinese restaurants where of course you can get much more food at much cheaper price).  To me the high prices are understandable as I know they use very fresh and local/organic ingredients and everything is house-made.  But I don't think I can convince him to come back here sometime soon...

Dinner at Eurbaluce

今日はかなり久しぶりに、イタリアンレストラン、Erbaluce へやって来ました。 Tonight we came to Erbaluce for dinner - it's been a long time since we visited last time.

フォカッチャと白豆のペースト入りのオリーブオイル。これは以前と変わってません。フォカッチャが焼き過ぎで底のほうがかな~り固かったのが残念ですが、豆のペーストはパンによく合っておいしい! First, focaccia and olive oil & white bean paste were served.  The focaccia was over-baked and the bottom part was very hard although we loved the white bean paste.

夫はお店の人に進められた赤ワインを注文。 My husband ordered the red wine recommended by our waitress.

私は味見してませんが、夫はかなり気に入ったよう。いつも家で飲んでる安いワインとはやっぱり違うといってました。 I didn't taste it, but my husband loved it.

私はまずマテ貝と緑胡椒を洋葱のスープとともに蒸したものをオーダーしました。貝はちょっと加熱しすぎかなって感じでしたが、貝から出たお出汁がとってもいい味でした。 For an appetizer, I ordered the razor clams steamed with green peppercorn and leek broth.  The razor clams were a bit over-cooked, but I loved the broth mixed with the clam juice.

夫は今日のスペシャル、英語でシャッド (shad) というお魚の卵のお料理。このお魚は北大西洋などに生息しているのですが産卵のときは鮭のように河をさかのぼり、産卵後はまた海へと帰っていくそうです。ちょうど今頃が産卵の季節。 My husband ordered one of today's special - the shad roe dish.

出てきたのは想像していたよりもかなり大きく、多分1匹から採れた卵全部が一皿に使われています。たらこ2腹分は余裕でありそう。おいしいですが、かな～りコレステロールが高そうです。後で支払いのときに気付いたのですがお値段もかなり高かったです (スペシャルはメニューには載ってないので注文時には値段はわかりませんでした) …。 He got a huge portion of the roe - much more than we expected.  It was tasty, but of too much cholesterol, I guess.  And it was kind of pricey (we didn't ask the price before placing our order..).

そして私のメイン料理はロブスターとウニ入りのサツマイモのニョッキ。ウニがとろ～っとしておいしい! 一見量はそんなにないように見えたのですが、途中でおなかいっぱいになってしまい、残りは夫に食べてもらいました。 For the main, I chose the white sweet potato gnocchi with roasted lobster, sea urchin and parsley.  The sea urchin was creamy and good.  The portion didn't look huge, but I got very full half way through and asked my husband to finish it.

夫が注文したのは猪のお肉のグリル。これはお肉がと~っても柔らかくてびっくり。お肉自体はとってもあっさりしていて、ワインの効いたソースとよく合います。 My husband tried the roasted rack of wild boar with wild Concord grapes and lavender mosto.  The meat was amazingly tender.  The meat itself was very lightly flavored, and matched very well with the sauce.

食後にはエスプレッソ。 And we had espresso after the meal.

以前ここで食事したとき、デザートにがっかりした記憶があったので今回は注文するのを止めようかと思ったのですが、でも何かひとつ注文しようということになり、一番無難そうなポーチドペアーを頼んでみました。 At our last visit, we were not impressed by their desserts, so we considered skipping it this time, but decided to try just one.  I chose the safest one in the menu - the poached pear with caramel sauce.

中にはラベンダー風味の濃厚なクリームが入っていて、私は結構気に入りました。キャラメルソースもおいしかったし。 Inside was very rich lavender-flavored cream.  I liked it a lot, actually.

最後にトリュフともう一つ、胡麻をまぶしたものが出てきました。トリュフは普通の味だったのですが、胡麻の方のものが何ともいえない変わった味。ちょっと中華風のフレーバーだったのですが私の口には合いませんでした…。夫も何ともいえない顔をしながら飲み込んでました。シェフが色々挑戦しているのは分かるんですけどね。でも全体としては満足した夕食でした。 At the end we were served with truffles - one was the normal one and the other one was with sesame.  The one with sesame had very weird (Chinese?) flavor and neither of us liked it.  I understand that the chef wants to be creative and try new things, but I don't think this one was very successful....  But overall, I was satisfied with tonight's dinner.

Dinner at Tenoch Mexican Grill

今日は数ヶ月前に家の近所にオープンしたメキシカンのお店、Tenoch Mexican Grill にやって来ました。セルフサービスの、小さなお店です。

Today we visited Tenoch Mexican Grill, a Mexican restaurant that was opened several months ago near our home.  It's a tiny, fast-food style joint (but it is not so fast as most of things are cooked to order)..

まずはトルティヤチップスとサルサ。チップスは紙袋にどっさり入ってきました。写真はそのほんの一部。食べ切れなかった分はお持ち帰り。 First we ordered tortilla chips and salsa.  The chips came in a big paper bag (the chips in this pic are only small portion of the entire bag) - we took the leftover home as we couldn't finish them all.

これは今日のスペシャルの一つ、ポーク、豆、アボカド、ラッディッシュそしてレッドチリなどがたっぷり入った Pozole Rojoというスープ。このスープ、ちょっと辛くておいしい! This was one of today's specials, Pozole Rojo, Mexican soup with pork, beans, avocado, shredded cabbage, radish, red chili, etc.  I've never had this before, but it was quite good.

これも今日のスペシャルの一品、ティラピアのソテー。 This was also today's special, tilapia con guacamolillo sauce, with sauteed peppers and avocado.

トルティヤが付いてきたので、これに巻いて食べました。う~ん、これもお魚に香辛料が効いていてなかなかいけます。 The dish came with tortillas, so we wrapped the fish and other stuff with it and ate it.  The fish was flavored with spices, and it was surprisingly good  - I liked the guacamole sauce as well.

これはトルタというメキシコのサンドイッチで、具はチキン、ポーク、ビーフ、チョリソー、野菜の中から選べます。これはビーフのtorta。中にはブラックビーンのペースト、トマト、レタス、アボカド、玉葱のピクルス、チポーレマヨネーズ、そしてメキシコのチーズ (queso Oaxaca) が入っています。一口食べるといろいろなフレーバーが口の中でミックスされて何とも言えないおいしさ!チーズがまたモッツァレラみたいにびよーんと伸びていい感じ! どれもみんなおいしかったし、家からも近く、またいつも行く日本食のスーパーマーケットのすぐ向かいにあり便利なので是非また食べに訪れたいです。お店はとても繁盛しているようでした。 This is the torta (Mexican sandwitch) with beef (you can choose  chicken, carnitas, beef, chorizo, or vegetables) along with black bean spread, slices of tomato, fresh avocado, pickled onion, chipotle mayo,  and queso Oaxaca (grilled on a panini press).  I took one bite, and flavors from all these different ingredients burst into my mouth!  Queso Oaxaca was stringy like mozzarella and I liked it.  Everything we had were very tasty and different from typical Mexican food in Boston (we don't have very good Mexican restaurants here), and the restaurant is conveniently located for us (very close to our home and also just across the street from a Japanese supermarket we frequent).  We'll definitely come back to try more.

Lunch at Lobster Pool, Rockport, MA

ボストンは今日もいいお天気。今日はちょっと遠出 (といっても家から車で40分ほどですが) して、Rockport というところまでお昼ご飯を食べにやってきました。今回訪れたのは Lobster Pool というお店。 It was the beautiful weather in Boston today again.  So we drove to Rockport (40~45 min drive from Boston) for lunch.  The place we chose today was "Lobster Pool".

室内でも食べられますが、私達はもちろん外のテーブルで海を見ながらお食事。外なら Poirot とも一緒にいられます。 Food can be served inside, but of course we ate at the outside table to take advantage of the nice weather and a beautiful view - in addition, Poirot can stay with us!

私は今年初のロブスターロールを注文。ロブスターがごろごろ入ってます。これを食べると夏がやってきたな~と感じます (まだ4月ですが)。 I ordered a lobster roll - this was the first lobster roll I had this year!  It had many big chunks of lobster meat - pretty good.

夫は Fisherman's Platter という、海老、帆立、白身魚、そして蛤のフライ (＋フレンチフライ) のセットにしました。これにコールスローも付いてきます。特に帆立が新鮮でおいしかったです。 My husband ordered the Fisherman's Platter which came with shrimp, clams, scallops and haddock (along with french fries and coleslaw).  My favorite was scallops which were fresh, sweet and succulent.

その後街の中心部へ向かう途中にビーチを発見。ほかに人は誰もいませんでした。 After the lunch, we found a beach on the way to the city center - there was nobody in the beach.

波打ち際を歩く Poirot。何かめぼしいものでも落ちてないかと砂浜の上を探し回ってます。 Poirot walked on the beach, looking for something good (or edible?) there.

でも突然波がすぐ近くまでやって来たのでびっくりして後ずさり。かなり怖がりです。 But suddenly the water came very close to him and he got scared and backed up...

海の水をちょっぴり飲んでみたのですが、しょっぱくて驚いたようです。 He also licked the water - of course he didn't know it was salty and he looked shocked a bit.

その後、街の中心部へやってきました。この辺は観光客でにぎわってます。 Then we came to the city center - lots of tourists around here.

ロブスターを捕るためのボートがたくさん止まっています。 We saw many boats which were for catching lobsters.

ロブスター捕り用のトラップやブイもありました。とってもカラフル。これは多分売り物だと思います。 Colorful lobster traps and buoys were beautifully displayed - I think these are for sale.

さらに歩いて海沿いまでやって来ました。高いところもへっちゃらの Poirot は岩の上に飛び乗って得意顔。 We continued to walk and came to the shore.  He likes to climb up high places, so he jumped up onto a big rock - he looked he was very proud of himself...

この石でできた道 (?) の先に小さな灯台のようなものが立っていたのですが、私のはいてた靴ではこんなところは歩けないので行きませんでした。でも一番先までいってる人たちも結構いました。 You can walk on the rocks to the end where a tiny lighthouse (?) is standing.  But my shoes were not appropriate for walking on these rocks so we didn't go.  I saw a quite few people walking there, though.

あるお店の前に大きな犬のぬいぐるみがあったのですが、Poirot はそれを本物の犬だと思って吠えてました。ちょっと怖かったみたいです。笑える。 Poirot found a big stuffed dog was in front of a shop - he thought it was a real dog and barked at it.  He is so funny!

アイスクリームを買って休憩したのですが、相変わらず食べ物には目がない Poirot はすぐにかぎつけて私のひざに前足を立てかけ、おねだり。全神経をアイスクリームに集中って感じでじ～っとアイスクリームを見つめます。仕方ないのでほんのちょっぴりおすそ分けしてやりました。 We took a break and got some ice cream.  As soon as I came out of the shop with the ice cream, Poirot found it out and begged for his share.  He was really focusing on the ice cream and never took his eyes off it...  I felt sorry for him and gave him a little bit (he was very happy).

そして帰りの車ではまたいつものように爆睡してました。 And he totally crashed in the car on teh way home as usual....

Dinner at Highland Kitchen

今夜は私たちのお気に入りのレストラン、Highland Kitchen へやって来ました。 Tonight we came to one of our favorite restaurants, Highland Kitchen, for dinner.

ここはいつも大人気なので、席を確保するため6時ごろに来たのですが、それでももう既に8割がた席は埋まってました。 It's very popular and always crowded, so we came early (~6 pm), but ~80% of seats were already occupied.

前菜一品目はバッファローソースで和えた芽キャベツのフライ。スパイシーで夫のビールもよく進みます。 First we ordered the buffalo fried Brussel sprouts.  It was spicy and good with beer.

さらに本日のスペシャルにあった、ソフトシェルクラブのフライを注文。いよいよソフトシェルクラブのシーズンです。蟹だけがぽんと出てくるのかと思ったのですが、蟹の下にはルッコラやトマトなどのサラダがたっぷり隠れてました。蟹はもちろんおいしくてバリバリと食べてしまいました。 And we also ordered one of today's special, the fried soft-shell crab.  It came with lots of greens and some other vegetables.  The crab was crunch and tasty.

夫が選んだのは、これも今日のスペシャルの講師のミラノ風カツレツ。お肉は超巨大で人の顔ほどの大きさです。お肉の下にもじゃが芋や茸などのお野菜がたっぷり入っています。 My husband chose the veal Milanese, which was also today's special.  The meat was as big as his face!  Again, it came with lots of veggies (potatoes, mushrooms, etc) under the meat.

私はローストチキンにしました。これもまたボリュームたっぷり。こちらの付け合せはサツマイモのハッシュと菜の花 (に似た野菜) のソテー。こチキンは表面はぱりっとクリスピーで中はとってもジューシー。!夫は自分注文したお料理よりもこっちのチキンのほうがおいしいといってました。ここはほんとに何を食べてもはずれがないので安心して何でも頼めます。 I ordered the pan-roasted boneless chicken with sweet potato hash, broccoli rabe and herb gravy.  This was huge, too.  The chicken was tender and juicy inside and crispy outside - very good.  My husband preferred this to his veal.  Everything on the menu is very good and I can always rely on their food.

Lunch at Trattoria di Monica

今日は散歩がてら久しぶりに North End (ボストンにあるイタリア人街) にお昼ごはんを食べにやってきました。 Today we visited North End and had our lunch there.

訪れたのは全部で20数席しかない小さなレストラン、Trattoria di Monica です。 The restaurant we picked today is Trattoria di Monica, a tiny restaurant with ~20 seats or so.

席に着くとまずパンとオリーブオイル、バルサミコ酢が運ばれてきました。パンはまずまずの味。 As soon as we sat at our table, bread and olive oil/balsamic vinegar were delivered.  The bread was OK.

夫は3コース$22というランチのセットをオーダー。3コースそれぞれ2種類のお料理から好きな方が選べます。一品目はサラダ。これはまあ普通。 My husband ordered the 3-course lunch menu ($22).  One dish out of two can be selected for each course.  The first course he chose was the insalata mista.  Nothing special.

二品目はブルスケッタ。トマトが甘くてジューシー。 The second course was the bruschetta all’Italiana (grilled bread, tomatoes, basil, garlic & extra virgin olive oil).  The tomatoes were juicy and sweet.

そして三品目はパッパルデッレのボロネーゼ。ここのパスタは全部手作りです。幅広パスタはさすがにアルデンテ、ソースもチーズがたっぷりでおいしい! And the third course was the pappardelle alla Bolognese (pasta is handmade at this restaurant).  The pasta was nicely al dente and the sauce was cheesy - very good.

私は今日のスペシャルの一つ (スペシャルが 10 ぐらいあって、ウェイトレスさんが一つ一つ説明してくれるのですが説明し終わるのに 5 分くらいかかってました!)、ムール貝、イタリアンソーセージとパプリカ入りのブカティーニにしました。ソーセージがちょっとスパイシー。量は私達にはちょうど良いくらいでしたが、普通のアメリカ人には物足りないかも。 I opted for one of today's specials (10 or so specials were available and our waitress described them one by one - it took nearly 5 min for her to explain all of them...) - the bucatini with mussels, Italian sausages and red paprika.  The sausages were a bit spicy and gave a nice kick.

最後にティラミスを二人で半分こしました。ここのティラミスはグラスのカップに入ってました。他にもたくさん試してみたいお料理がたくさんがあるので、また夜にでも食べに来ようと思います。 At the end, we shared the tiramisu, which was served in a glass.  I found many dishes I wanted to try - we'll come back for dinner sometime soon!

お店を出た後、すぐ向かいにある Bova's Bakery にふらっと立ち寄ったらおいしそうなアランチーニが目に飛び込んできました。誘惑に勝てず、プロシュート入りのを2つ買ってしまいました。今日の晩御飯です。 After the lunch, we stopped at Bova's Bakery just across from the restaurant.  Then I found these big arancine!  I couldn't resist and bought two of them with  prosciutto for dinner.

さらにその横にはサンドイッチがずら～っと! アスパラガス、モッツアレラとプロシュート入りのも購入。でもかなり脂っこかったです。 And next to arancine were these big subs!  They looked very yummy, so I got the one with asparagus, mozzarella and prosciutto which I ate for lunch next day.  But this was very oily....

食事＆お買い物の後は腹ごなしにウォータフロントまで Poirot と一緒にお散歩。 Then we walked to the water front with Poirot to consume some calories we took.

今日のボストンは昨日よりもさらに暑くて早くもばて気味の Poirot。とっても辛そうな顔です。でも辛そうなふりをするのがうまいので本当にしんどいのかどうかはわかりません。 It was even hotter today than yesterday in Boston, and Poirot seemed to get tired after a just short walk.  He looked so tired...  But he is very good at pretending he is tired, so I am not sure he was really tired or not....
