At Narita Airport, we enjoyed the last meal in Japan (although we ate at a Chinese restaurant). |

Trip to Taiwan-Japan Day 16 ( 京都 (Kyoto) - 東京 (Tokyo))
We took a Shinkansen train (bullet train) to Tokyo. I will miss my family as I can't see them until next time... |
Tokyo Station. |
We stayed at Hotel Metropolitan Marunouchi, located right next to the entrance to the Tokyo Station. |
The front desk in on the 27th floor of the building. |
We both were tired, so didn't do much sightseeing, just walked around the station. |
To have lunch, we went to a Hong Kong style restaurant inside the Daimaru department store. |
We ordered the porridge set and |
the Dim sum set. |
After the lunch, we went to the basement of the department store (Basement space in almost all department stores in Japan is for food - it is food heaven...). |
Japanese style rusks. |
Huge steamed pork buns. |
Warabi-mochi (a jelly-like confection made from bracken starch and covered or dipped in kinako (sweet toasted soybean flour)). |
A lunch box |
Grilled squids |
Soft serve ice cream. |
Muffins. |
Cookies. |
After some food shopping, we went back to our hotel and took a nap, then visited the Tokyo Tower. |
Here it is. |
It is almost as beautiful as the Eiffel Tower. |
A manhole cover with a cherry blossom motif. |
We came back to the hotel and ate dinner in our room. This is a futo-maki (fat sushi roll) from the department store. |
明日はいよいよ帰国です! And this is the lunch box. |

Trip to Taiwan-Japan Day 15 ( 京都 (Kyoto))
Today is the last day in Kyoto (tomorrow we'll leave for Tokyo where we will stay for one night before going back to Boston). Before leaving, we went for lunch at Wagokoro Izumi with my parents. This restaurant is the Michelin 1 star restaurant. |
At first, a cup of cherry blossom tea was served. It is so spring-like. |
This is the dish that was the solidified mixture of ground tofu, fish, etc. Sea urchin was on top of it. Very delicious. |
Soup with red snapper and a kind of fish cake (called "shinjo"). It was very light. |
Three kinds of sashimi. |
We were advised to eat squid sashimi with this salt from France. It matched very well. |
Assembly of small dishes (for 4 people). The picture is not very good, but it was very very beautiful. |
It was the art on the plate. I feel so lucky to be from Kyoto. |
Green vegetable and bamboo shoot. |
Green pea rice. We could not finish all of it and took home the left-over rice. |
Soup and pickles. |
Dessert No. 1. |
Dessert No. 2. |
And lastly, green tea. Ahhh, after such a good meal, I don't feel like going back to Boston... |
Then, my husband and I walked around the city. |
Kamo River. It was a little too early for cherry blossoms. |
Some trees were already blossoming. |
A typical view of Kyoto. |
We took a break at a cafe. My husband ordered a green tea parfait again. |
I ordered a cherry blossom shaped Japanese sweet and green tea. |

Trip to Taiwan-Japan Day 14 ( 宮島日帰り旅行(Miyajima))
Using our JR pass, we made a day trip to Miyajima by Shinkansen train (from Kyoto to Hiroshima). |
Then we transfered to a local train at the Hiroshima station. |
Just in front of teh Miyajima station is the small ferry port to Miyajima. The ferry is also operated by JR, so JR pass can be used for this ferry as well. |
This is the ferry we took. The ferry leaves every 15 minutes, so we didn't have to wait too long. |
This picture was taken from inside teh ferry overlooking the ferry port. |
We are getting close to the famous floating torii (a torii is a traditional Japanese gate at the entrance of a Shinto shrine)! |
This stone says that Miyajima is one of the 3 most scenic areas in Japan. |
A famouse Hiroshima dessert called "momiji manju" (meaning "maple sweet bun") in a Hello Kitty shape. |
Hiroshima is famous for oysters! |
This is the fried momiji manju. This is more like a modern twist of the traditional version. |
Steamed buns with sea eels inside (Hiroshima is also famouse for sea eels). |
We bought one. It was $3.5 (not cheap). The taste was OK. |
First we had our lunch at a nearby restaurant. My husband ordered the rice bowl with sea eels. |
I ordered the rice bowl with oysters. |
