Lunch at Teranga

今日は以前から気になっていた、South End にあるセネガル料理のお店、Teranga にランチを食べに行きました。 Today we went to "Teranga", a Senegalese restaurant in South End, for lunch.  I have been wanting to come to this restaurant for a while.

レビューではかなり評判の良いお店なので、楽しみです。11時半ごろにお店に着いた時には誰もお客さんはいませんでした（結局、私たちが帰る頃に1人来ただけ）。夜はとても賑わっていると聞いたのですがお昼は違うみたいです。 I read good reviews, so I was looking forward to it. When we arrived at 11:30 am, nobody else was there (only one person came when we were about to leave).  I heard it is very crowded for dinner, but may not be so for lunch.

ケニヤのビール。アフリカ産のビールはこのケニヤのものだけでした。セネガルではビール、つくってないのかなあ？ A bottle of beer from Kenya.  This was the only African beer available.  I wonder no beer is produced in Senegal...

生姜のジュース。生姜汁、パイナップルジュースとオレンジフラワーウォーターを混ぜたものです。生姜の味がとても強く、生姜好きの私にはうれしい味です。 Ginger juice.  Ginger root juice mixed with pineapple juice, orange flower water and vanilla sugar.  It had a strong ginger flavor, which I love.

バゲットのスライスと、ソース。何のソースかわかりませんが色々なスパイスが入っていて、ちょっとカレーのような味。 Slices of baguette and some kind of sauce.  I don't know what it was, but it had a lot of spices and tasted a little bit like curry.

Nems というアペタイザー。春巻きの一種なのですが、皮がお餅のようにもちもちしていておいしい！ニョクマムをつけて食べます。ちょっとベトナム風。セネガルもベトナムも元はフランス領だった関係で、多くのベトナム人がセネガルに移住し、ベトナムの食文化をもたらしたそうです。 Nems.  Spring rolls stuffed with chicken, beef, vermicelli and vegetables. The skin was like sticky rice and very tasty.  I heard that food in Senegal has Vietnamese influences as both countries were used to be French colonies and many Vietnamese people immigrated to Senegal.

私は Thiébou Djeun というお料理を注文。トマトベースのお魚のシチュー。ジャスミンライスとかぼちゃ、人参などの野菜も付いてきます。これはセネガルの国民食だそうです。ソースとお野菜はおいしかったのですが、お魚はかなりぱさぱさ。 I ordered Thiébou Djeun , herb-stuffed white fish cooked in tomato stew with jasmine rice and various vegetables.  The sauce and vegetables were good, but the fish was very dry.

これは夫の注文した Thiébou Yap という一品。ラム肉とジャスミンライス。夫によると、ラムもかなりぱさぱさだったそう。なんかどちらも昨日の残りを過熱したって感じでした。 My husband ordered Thiébou Yap, seasoned lamb cubes cooked with vegetables and served with broken jasmine rice.  According to my husband, the lamb meat was also very dry.  I doubted these were the left-over from last night and re-heated.

ちょっと期待が大きかっただけに、ちょっとがっかりしました。日曜のお昼という時間帯が悪かったのでしょうか？夕食ならもっとおいしかったかも。写真はレストランを出て歩いているときに見つけた、庭先に立っていた木。一本の木に、赤、オレンジ、黄色、黄緑のグラデーションができていてとてもきれいでした。 I had a high expectation, so was disappointed.  Maybe Sunday lunch is not a good time?  We should have visited for dinner??  The picture is the tree we found in someone's front yard when we were walking the street after lunch.  Beautiful gradation of colors!

Comfy Blanket

Poirot はこのブランケットが大のお気に入り。いつもこの上で寝ています。 Poirot loves this blanket.   He always sleeps on it.

今日もブランケットの上で寝そべっているうちに眠くなってきました。 As usual, he got sleepy while laying down on this blanket.

瞼がだんだん重くなってきました。 His eyelids were getting heavier...

最後は目を開いたままいびきをかいて寝ていました。 At the end, he fell asleep with his eye open (but snoring)!

Halloween in Salem, MA

明後日はハロウィーンですね！ということで今夜はセーラム (Salem) という街へ行って来ました。ボストンからは車で30分位で行けます。セーラムは魔女裁判（1692年3月1日にはじまる一連の裁判で、200名近い村人が魔女として告発され、19名が処刑、1名が拷問中に圧死、5名が獄死したそうです）が行われたことで有名で、今ではそれが観光の目玉になっています。特に10月（ハロウィーンの季節）には毎年多くの観光客がやって来ます。 Halloween is coming!  So we went to Salem, MA, which is famous for the witch trials.  Every year especially in October (Halloween season), many people visit Salem.

街はハロウィーン一色です。 The entire city celebrates Halloween.

お店のショーウィンドーもそれぞれユニークなハロウィーンの飾り付けがしてあって、楽しめます。 Each shop decorates their show-windows with Halloween themes.

銀行のウィンドーにはフランケンシュタインもいます。 Franckenstein looking outside from the window of a bank.

異様にサドルの高い自転車。誰が乗るのでしょうか？ Who rides this bicycle??

街には仮装している人たちがあふれています。このグループはフルーツや野菜のコスチューム。 Many people are wearing various costumes.  This is the fruits/vegetables group.

セクシーなお姉ちゃんもいます。今夜はすごく寒かったのですが、こんな薄着で風邪引いちゃうんじゃないかと人ごとながら心配になります。 Ladies with sexy costumes.  It was very old tonight, and I was worried they might catch cold!

お化け屋敷などのアトラクションもたくさんあって、大勢の人が列を作って入場を待っています。 There are many haunted houses and other attractions, and many people are waiting in line to get in.

この仮装カップルは大人気でたくさんの人が写真を撮っていました。 This couple in the costume was very popular and many people took their pictures.

もちろんかぼちゃもあります。 And of course pumpkin lanterns.

夜店も色々出ています。 There are various street food shops as well.

これはセーラムに来るたびに（ハロウィーンの時しか来たことありませんが）たべる、りんご入りのシナモンブレッドとバニラアイスクリーム。暖かいシナモンブレッドと冷たいアイスクリームの組み合わせが最高です。 We always get an apple cinnamon bun with ice cream.  The combination of warm bun and cold ice cream is the best!

牛の Poirot も食べたそうにしています。今夜の Poirot はいつもにも増して大人気で、すれ違う人達から可愛いと言われてちょっと得意げでした。 Poirot, the cow, stared at the plate, hoping he got a small piece of the bun.  Poirot was very popular tonight, and many people passing by complimented his costume.  He looked very proud of himself!

ポップコーンも買いました。これも来るたびに買うアイテムで、塩味と砂糖の甘い味が合わさった、やみつきになる味です。 We also bought two bags of popcorn.  Every time we visit here, we buy this item.  It tastes salty yet sweet and once you start, you can't stop eating.

観覧車などの乗り物もあります。よく見ると、真ん中の絵は箒に乗った魔女です。 A Ferris wheel.  At the center, can you see a witch on broom?

Poirot はまたまたおねむです。 Poirot, as usual, was sleepy in the car.

Poirot the Milk Cow!

１０月３１日はハロウィーンですね！去年は Poirot は蜘蛛になりましたが、今年は乳牛になります！ちゃんとお乳も付いています。 Halloween is almost here!  Poirot became a spider last year, and he will be a milk cow this year!  He has nipples, too!

今夜はこれを着て、魔女裁判で有名なセーラム (Salem) へ行く予定です！ Tonight we are planning to go to Salem, MA, which is famous for the witch trials, with Poirot wearing this costume!

Trip to Japan (6) (Kyoto)

関西人たるもの、帰省中最低1回は粉もんを食べなあかん!ということで、今夜はお好み焼きを食べに行きました。 Tonight I went to eat Japanese pancakes, which are very popular in the west part of Japan (especially in Osaka).  I always miss this food and eat it at least once when I go back to Japan.

お好み焼きのほかにも色々な鉄板焼きメニューを注文。これはとん平焼き（豚肉と卵を焼いたもの）。関西のお好み焼きのお店では定番ですが、ほかの地方にもあるのでしょうか? In addition to pancakes, we ordered various grilled dishes (called teppan-yaki in Japanese).  This is the grilled pork and egg dish.

帆立。 Grilled scallops.

砂ずり。こりこりしておいしい。 Grilled gizzard.  I love its texture.

げその塩焼き。げそ大好き。 Squid's legs (arms?).  I love this part of squid.

これは蛸の入った卵生地をたこ焼き風に焼いたもの。たこ焼きとはまた違う味と食感です。 This dish had octopus and some vegetables in egg and flour based dough.

今回は牛筋とこんにゃく入りのねぎ焼きにしてみました。使われているねぎはもちろん九条ねぎです。京都の人は九条ねぎを普通に食べていますが、関東では九条ねぎはすごく値段が高いらしいですね。 This time we ordered a pancake with lots of green onions, beef tendon, konjac and other stuff.

ミックス焼きそば。あ~やっぱり粉もん最高! ボストンでお好み焼きのお店開いたら繁盛するかな~? Yakisoba (fried noodles).  Sooo good! I wonder whether this type of restaurant can attract many costomers if opened in Boston...

Trip to Japan (5) (Kyoto)

今日のお昼は祇園にある山玄茶というお店に行きました。ここはミシュラン1つ星です。 Today, I visited Sangencha, a Japanese restaurant in Gion for lunch.  This restaurant has Michelin one star.

座席は１階のカウンター席10席と２階の個室２部屋。今回は３人だったので個室にしてもらいました。 There are 10 seats at the counter on the first floor and 2 private rooms on the second floor.  Since we were three, we booked one of the private rooms.

秋らしく紅葉の絵の入った敷物。 Japanese maple leaves were printed on the luncheon mat.  It is very suitable for fall.

まずは昆布茶が出てきました。私が普段飲むような安物のインスタントの昆布茶とは違って、昆布の味がかなり強くておいしかったです。 At first, seaweed tea was served.  It had a strong seaweed flavor and I liked it very much.

先付。帆立、しめじ等が入っています。ゆずの香りが味を引き立たせています。 Appetizer.  Scallops, simeji mushrooms, etc.  Yuzu (Japanese citrus) enhanced the flavor of the dish.

椀物。この季節はやはり土瓶蒸ですね! Soup.  This is a typical dish (dobin-mushi) in this time of the year.

中には松茸、鱧、魚のすり身、生麩などが入っていました。お出汁がやっぱり違いますね。薄味だけどすごくおいしい。 Inside, it had matsutake mushrooms, daggertooth pike conger, fish cakes, etc.  The soup was very light but tasty.

向付。鰹と鯛。ここのお刺身はちょっと変わっていて、お醤油ではなく大根おろしとポン酢をかけて食べます。 Skipjack tuna and red snapper sashimi.  This sashimi is not traditional, and we ate it with ground daikon radish and ponzu sauce instead of soy sauce.

お店の人は、"カルパッチョ風”と言っていました。たぶん自家製なのでしょうが、このポン酢がまたおいしい! It was more like carpaccio.  This ponzu sauce (I believe home made) was very good.

鉢魚。檜の器自体がすごくいいにおいです。 This container is made of Japanese cypress, and smelled very good.

中は鰆の焼き物。上に乗っているのは柴漬けです! Grilled fish (I don't know its English name).

八寸。私はどこのお料理屋さんでも季節感あふれる八寸が一番楽しみです。 This contained various different dishes.

葉っぱを取るとこんな感じ。わかさぎの揚物、柿の天麩羅、鯖寿司、その他色々。わかさぎの下にも何品か隠れています。 Underneath the leaf, you can find fried fish, egg, mackerel sush, etc.

さらに鮭と小芋、麩のあんかけ。鮭と小芋は一度揚げてあります。このあんがすご～くおいしかったです! In addition, we got the dish contained salmon, taro, and wheat gluten.  This soup was sooo tasty!

最後のお食事用の香の物と、 Pickles and

おじゃこ。 Small fish (I don't know its English name) for rice.

そしてご飯とお味噌汁。 Rice and miso soup.

ご飯は新米だそう。まず最初にお塩で、その後おじゃこと一緒に食べました。ご飯はちょっと柔らかめだけど、すごく甘みがあっておいしい。おかわりもできますが、この時点でもうおなかいっぱいです。 This rice was harvested this year.  It tasted sweet!  You can request another bowl of rice if you'd like, but I was already too full.

お味噌汁は赤だし（の上澄みだけだそうです）。 Miso soup.

水菓子はグレープフルーツの上にワインゼリーが乗ったもの。グレープフルーツには一房ずつナイフがはいているので、食べやすかったです。このワインゼリーがグレープフルーツの苦味とよく合って美味。 Grapefruit and wine jello.  This jello was a good match with the biterness of grapefruit.

そして最後にアイス最中。 And at last, monaka.

中にバニラアイスクリームと餡子が隠れています。どれもとてもおいしく、値段もリーズナブル（5500円）で大満足です。今度は夜にぜひ訪ねたいです。 Inside, it had vanilla ice cream and red bean paste.  Every dish was very tasty and I was very satisfied.  I would like to visit for dinner next time.
