Brunch at Island Creek Oyster Bar

今日は、本当は Back Bay にあるレストランでブランチを食べる予定だったのですが、レストランに行く道路がすべて通行止め。なぜかと言うと、Walk for Hunger というチャリティーイベントのため (これは十分に食べることができない人たちを助けるための資金集めのイベントで、参加者 (4万人以上) が20マイル (約32 km) を歩くというプロジェクト)。一箇所だけ、車では入れる道があったのですがもちろん大渋滞。 Today we were supposed to have our brunch in Back Bay, but almost all the roads to get into Back Bay were blocked due to Walk of Hunger (fund-raising event for those who do not have enough food to eat).   One road was open, but of course there was a terrible traffic jam.

そこで急遽行き先を変更して Kenmore スクウェアにある Island Creek Oyster Bar に行くことに。実は、今日は午後から Red Sox の試合が Fenway 球場で予定されているため (球場はKenmore スクウェアのすぐ近く)、車を止められる場所はあまりなかったのですが何とか見つけることができました。 So we gave up going there, changing our plan and decided to go to Island Creek Oyster Bar in Kenmore Square.  Actually, it was also difficult to find a parking spot on the streets because the Red Sox game was scheduled in the afternoon at Fenway Stadium (the stadium is very close to Kenmore Square). But fortunately we could got a spot.

レストランまでは10分ほど歩かないといけなかったのですがお天気が良かったので、ちょうど良い散歩になりました。 We had to walk for ~10 min to the restaurant, but it was a nice walk as we had the wonderful weather.

球場の近くにある、野球のボールの形をした新聞の無人販売機。 This is the baseball-shaped newspaper vending machine near the stadium.

試合のある日は近辺の駐車場代がすご～く高くなります。$40 で、それも試合が終わった後1時間後には出ないといけないなんて、ぼったくりだと思うのですが、それでも止めている人がたくさんいました (私たちは道路の脇に止めたので、無料です)。 On the game days, the parking fees hike up to ridiculous prices.  The fee at this parking lot was $40 (and cars had to leave within 1 hour after the game finished).  I think it is outrageous, but many people parked here (we parked on the street for free!).

久しぶりにお気に入りのIsland Creek Oyster Bar へ。でもブランチメニューは限られていて、その上毎回ほとんど同じなので今回はあまり食べたいと思うものが見つかりませんでした。 It’s been a while since we came to this restaurant last time.  But the brunch menu was very limited and hadn’t changed much since our last visit, so I didn’t find anything I really wanted to try.

私はフィッシュ&チップスを注文。衣が分厚くてちょっと半生っぽくていまいち。 I decided to order the fish & chips, but the dough was very thick and undercooked.   I will not order this again.

夫は私が以前食べたロブスターのオムレツ。 My husband ordered the lobster omelet (I ordered the same one last time).

私たちは2人ともここのパンとバターが大好きなので、追加でトーストを注文。このパンは、見た目はスーパーで売っているようなパンであまりおいしそうには見えないのですが、でもぱさぱさしてなくていい小麦粉を使っているのがわかります。バターは蜂蜜入りでほんのり甘くてこれがまたパンに良く合うんです。 We both love their bread and butter, so we additionally ordered the toast.   It looked just ordinal bread, but it was very tasty.  The butter had honey in it, so it was slightly (not too much) sweet and matched with the bread very well.

食事後は、Poirot と一緒に Charles 川沿いをお散歩 (なぜかPoirot の写真がありませんが)。 After the brunch we walked along the Charles River with Poirot (although somehow I didn’t take his pictures).

八重桜が満開です。 Fully bloomed cherry blossoms.  Beautiful.

お天気が良いといっても私にはまだ肌寒い位の気温なのですが、アメリカ人は太陽大好きなので、早速半袖短パンで日光浴をしていました。彼らと私とでは、寒いと感じる温度がかなり違うようです。 Although sunny, it was still chilly to me, but many people were enjoying sun-bathing wearing short sleeves and short pants.

川ではボストン大学の学生さんがセーリングをしていました。長~い冬がやっと終わってこれからボストンは良い季節になります。 On the river, students at BU (Boston University) were sailing.   Long winter has finally gone and beautiful spring has come to Boston!
