Trip to Atlanta (1)

今日から6日間、学会に参加するためアトランタに滞在します。アトランタを訪れるのは初めてなので楽しみ~。ちなみに夫も休暇を取って4日間一緒に過ごします。 Starting from today, I'll be staying in Atlanta for 6 days to attend a conference.  This is the first time for me to visit Atlanta, so I'm very excited.  My husband will be with me for the first 4 days as well.

学会が始まるのは明日からなので今日は1日自由行動。まずはお昼ご飯を食べにミッドタウンのレストランまで出かけました。 The conference starts tomorrow, so we have one free day to explore the city.  But first of all, we need to eat lunch!

ホテルの人においしいフライドチキンのお店をいくつか教えてもらったうちのひとつ、South City Kitchen にやって来ました。 We asked for a good fried chicken place at the hotel concierge, and were recommended a few places including South City Kitchen in Midtwon which we decided to try.

とりあえずオレンジジュースとコーヒーを注文。 We ordered coffee and orange juice.

パンは南部地方らしく、コーンブレッドとビスケット。 Instead of normal bread, corn bread and biscuits were served - very Southern!

そしてこれがフライドチキン。かなり大きいです。お肉はとってもジューシーで柔らかい! 付け合せのマッシュポテトもベーコンたっぷりでおいしい! This is the fried chicken my husband ordered - it was huge but the meat was very juicy and tender.  The mushed potatoes and collard green sitting under the chicken had lots of garlic and bacon.  A very satisfying dish!

そしてこれも南部地方のメニュー、シュリンプ&グリッツです。グリッツとはとうもろこしを挽いて粉にしたものをお粥状にしたもの。私はこのグリッツの粒々した食感がお気に入り。ちょっとスパイシーで、ハムがごろごろ入っていて、いかにも南部料理って感じでとってもおいしい~。 And I ordered the shrimp and grits.  It was a bit spicy (which I like) and I loved the texture of grits. This was a very comforting dish, too.

その後は腹ごなしに World of Coca-Cola へやって来ました。コカコーラ博物館のようなものです。アトランタにはコカコーラ社の本社があります。 After the big lunch, we came to World of Coca-Cola.

ちなみに入場料は大人一人$16!! はっきり言ってこの施設自体がコカコーラの宣伝のようなものなのに、その上に$16 も取るのはぼったくりの様にも思えますがしょうがないので諦めて二人分、$32 払いました。元、取れるかな? To me, this entire building is for Coca-cola's advertisement, and I don't quite understand why they have to charge us $16/person.  It's too expensive!  But what can I do?  So I suck it up and paid $32 for me and my husband...

まず中に入るとたくさんのポスターやサインの展示してある部屋に案内され、ここでコカコーラの歴史など簡単な説明を受けます。 After passing the lobby area, we were introduced to the room called "Coca-Cola Loft" where a collection of Coca-Cola advertising artifacts are exhibited.

よく知らないのですが、色々なキャラクターもあるようです。 I don't know much, but there seems to be many Coca-Cola characters.

この陶器の器がここにある中で一番古いものらしいです。1886 年 (??) 位に作られたものらしいです。この後、何かよく分からない映画を見せられ (コカコーラのキャラクターたちが歌って踊るという、何の内容もないもの。もっとコーラの歴史などの説明を期待してたのにな~)。 This ceramic bowl is the oldest object in here (made in 1886?  I don't remember exactly..).  Then we all forced to watch a short movie which I got very bored of (Coca-Cola characters were dancing and singing and I didn't learn anything...  I was expecting the detailed history of Coke and such).

映画の後は展示室にある色々な展示品を自由に見て回ります。 After the movie, we could look around various exhibits on our own.

昔はこんな機械で1本1本、瓶に栓をしていたようです。 Bottles were used to be capped one by one using this machine....

色々な国のポスターを展示してある部屋にはもちろん日本のポスターもあります。昔はコーラをお中元に送っていたなんて! その頃はコーラは高級品だったんですね。 Old posters from various different countries were also presented.  This is from Japan.  I guess they used to use Coca-Cola as gift (packed in a gift box!).  I bet Coke was very rare and expensive at that time.

これもかなり年代ものっぽいポスター。この写真の人は誰なんでしょうか。加山雄三? 違うか...。 This is also from Japan.  Looked very old....

昔の自動販売機もありました。 Old vending machines were also displayed.

なぜかその中に混じって、最近の日本の自動販売機も展示してあります。私たち日本人にしてみれば普通ですが、確かにアメリカの自動販売機に比べるとハイテクっぽいかも。 Among them, I found a Japanese machine (which is relatively new).  In Japan, we can buy not only cold drinks, but also hot drinks from a vending machine like this one (I've never seen a vending machine with hot drinks in US).

そのほかにもコーラを作るプロセスを見ることができるコーナーなどもあったのですがさらっと流して、お楽しみの試飲コーナーへやって来ました。 There were may other exhibitions (such as a real bottling line to see how Coke is being made, etc), but we didn't spend too much time.  Instead we rushed into the room called  "Taste It!" to try various Coca-Cola products.

ここでは世界中のコカコーラ者で販売しているジュースを飲むことができます。見たこともない飲み物がいっぱい。 Here you can taste the Coca-Cola products from all over the world.  So many drinks I've never heard of/seen/tasted!

ウガンダのファンタエキゾティックは私が子供の頃にあった、ファンタフルーツパンチに似た味。 Uganda's Fanta Exotic tasted similar to Japan's Fanta Fruit Punch (which was available when I was little).

イギリスのキンリービターレモンというのは普通においしいレモネードでした。 UK's Kinley Bitter Lemon was just like normal lemonade (but not too sweet and good).

このイタリアの Beverly というのは半透明の炭酸水のように見えるのですが、甘苦いというか何ともいえない味。 This drink, Beverly, is apparently sold in Italy (but I've never seen it while I was there several times) and translucent (almost clear but slightly white) carbonated drink.  It tasted weird - bitter and slightly sweet.  I don't know how to describe it...

ペルーのインカコーラ。まっ黄色で飲むのをためらうような色です。ちょっと薬草っぽい味。 Peru's Inca Kola was very bright yellow (making me hesitant to taste it).  It tasted a bit like medicinal herbs.

最後に一人1本お土産のコーラがもらえます。 At the end, everyone can get one bottle of coke.

建物を出るにはお土産物屋さんを通っていかなければなりません。自社の宣伝のための施設に入るのに一人$16 も取った上にさらにお土産物を買わせようなんてなんて悪どいんだと腹が立ってきました。こんな T シャツ、そこらへんの店で $5 くらいで買えるのにここでは $20 程します。 To get out of the building, of course we have to go through the gift shop...  $16/person is already expensive for me to look through Coca-Cola advertisement, and they still want to take more money from me?!  They sell various T-shirts for ~$20 which you can buy for ~$5 at a discount store!!

そんなん買うわけないやろ~と思いながら写真だけ撮って出てきました。でもたくさん買い込んでいる人たちがいてびっくり。 Of course I didn't buy anything (just took pictures), but I saw many people buying a lot of stuff!!
