Trip to Taiwan-Japan Day 16 (京都 (Kyoto))

明日はアメリカへ帰る日なので、買い忘れたお土産などを買うため、京都駅周辺までショッピングにやって来ました (毎回お土産を買うのにすごい時間と費用を費やしてしまいます...)。 We are going back to US tomorrow and needed to finish our shopping (for mostly souvenirs - we always spend lots of time and money for souvenirs....).  So we came to the Kyoto Station area.

土曜日なので駅周辺は観光客で溢れかえっていて、レストランはどこも長蛇の列。なので伊勢丹の地下にあるカレー屋さん、サンマルコへやって来ました (ここでも少し待たないといけませんでしたが)。夫はカレーオムライス。 Since it was Saturday today, there were soooo many tourists in the area and we couldn't find any restaurants that we could get a seat without a long wait....  So we decided to try a Japanese-style curry house called San Marco (this shop is something between a restaurant and food court) in the basement of Isetan department store.  My husband ordered this dish.

オムライスのご飯がカレー味、そして上にかかっているソースもカレーです。日本のカレーはやっぱりおいしい! This dish is called "Omu-rice", Japanese fusion cuisine consisting of fried rice inside an omelette.  This restaurant's version was with curry-flavored rice with the curry sauce.  Yum.

私はチキンのカレー。カレーは夫のものとは違ってちょっと酸味のある味。ですが、これはこれでいけます。でもチキンが2切れなのはちょっと寂しい...。 I ordered the chicken curry.  The curry sauce for this dish (which had some acidity) was different from the sauce used in my husband's dish.  This was not bad, either, but I got only two pieces of chicken...

買い物の後、喫茶店で休憩しようと思ったのですが、これがまたどこに行ってもすごい人。普段はほとんどお客がいないようなお店でさえ、30分以上待ちだといわれました。信じられない...。でもなぜか駅ビル8階にある Honeybee に空席が!! Then we continued shopping and tried to take a break at a cafe, but again, no seat was available wherever we went...  But we finally found one cafe (Honeybee) that had an available table!!

夫のリクエストで抹茶の和フェ＋栗を注文。抹茶の方は普通でしたが栗のアイスクリームがおいしかったです。 My husband requested to get the dessert with a piece of waffle, green tea ice cream, chestnut ice cream, and green tea jello with green tea syrup.  It was OK - nothing special.  A crowd of people got me exhausted and we went home after this....

Trip to Taiwan-Japan Day 15 (2)(京都 (Kyoto))

夕食には私の両親と一緒に鰻を食べに、祇園にあるう桶や う へやって来ました。 For the dinner, my husband, parents and I came to "Uoke-ya U” in the Gion district.  This restaurant’s specialty is eels (they only serves dishes with eels).

お座敷は階段を上がった2階にあります。 There are a few tables on the 1st floor, but our table was in a tatami room on the 2nd floor.

まずはいつものように私以外はビールで乾杯。 First of all, everyone except me had beer as usual.

しばらくするとう巻きが出てきました。 Next we ordered an “U-maki”, a sort of eel omelet.

卵からおいしそうなお出汁があふれ出てきます。熱々のうちに速攻で食べました。おいし～。 The egg was sooo soft and juicy (dashi broth was added to eggs).  I ate it quickly before it got cold.

さていよいよう桶が登場。4人前注文したのですが、かなり大きな桶です。 Then came a big wooden container…

蓋を開けるとおいしそうな鰻がた～っぷり乗っています。 The cover was removed and we found beautifully grilled eels over the rice mixed with the special sauce.  It smelled great as well.

う桶にはもちろん肝吸いも付いてきます。 The soup with eel’s stomach/kidney parts also came with the rice.

桶から小皿に取り分け、山椒をたっぷり振っていただきます。ご飯のたれは薄めなので、私はテーブルにおいてあるたれをさらに上から少しかけました。鰻は超柔らかくて最高! 1人前2切れなのですが、ご飯もたくさん入っているのでかなりおなかが膨れます。もう食べられないと言いながらも4人で完食しました。また暫くこんなおいしい鰻は食べられません~。 Each of us transferred the eel and rice to our own plate, and added the Japanese pepper (called “sansho”) on top of it.  Ohhhhh, soooo gooood!  The eel was so tender and had nice flavor of charcoal (eels are grilled over charcoal).  You can’t eat such tasty eels in the US…

祇園も花見小路は観光客で溢れ返っていますが、ちょっと脇道に入ると人通りもまばらでいい風情です。 The main street in the Gion district (Hanami-koji Street) were occupied by full of tourists, but once you get into side streets, it usually is very quiet and elegant looking - very pleasant to walk.

Trip to Taiwan-Japan Day 15 (1)(京都 (Kyoto))

今日は朝からお稲荷さん (伏見稲荷) へやって来ました。ここは全国３万社以上もあるお稲荷さんの総本山です。起源は西暦711年までさかのぼります。小さい頃は毎年初詣に来ていましたが、一番最近来たのはいつのことか思い出せないくらい昔です。 This morning we came to Fushimi Inari Taisha.  This is the head shrine of Inari (more than 30000 sub-shrines of Inari throughout Japan).  The earliest structures were built in 711.

JR の駅を出てすぐ目の前にある大きな鳥居をくぐるとその先に楼門が見えてきます。 Just across the street from the JR station is the huge  torii (Japanese gate commonly found at the entrance of or within a shrine), and then the main gate.

楼門の脇には狛犬ではなく神使の狐がいます。このほかにも神社内のあちこちに狐の像があります。 The statues of foxes (one at each side) can be found at the gate (and at many other places).  Foxes are regarded as messenger of the God.

こちらは外拝殿。この奥に本殿があります。 This is the main shrine.

千本鳥居で有名なだけあって、絵馬も鳥居の形です。ちなみに狐の顔の形をした絵馬もありました。 This shrine is famous for "thousands of torii".  Miniature torii (with prayers) are offered to the God.

大きな鳥居が並ぶ下をくぐりながら、千本鳥居のあるところまで向かいます。 We walked to the inner shrine by going through a row of huge torii.

ここにも狐さんがいました。 We found foxes here, too.

ここからが千本鳥居の始まりです。数え切れないほどの鳥居が隙間なくびっしりと並んでいて、その下を歩くとちょっと幻想的な雰囲気。なんか自分まで赤く染まってしまいそう。 From here,  a path lined with thousands of torii starts.  It was kind of dreamy and surreal walking under so many torii.

鳥居をくぐり抜けたところにある奥の院が見えてきました。 At the end of the path is the inner shrine.

ここにはおもかる石という石があります。この石の前で願い事をしてから石灯篭の頭の部分を持ち上げ、そのときに感じる重さが、自分が予想していたよりも軽ければ願い事が叶い、重ければ叶わないらしいです。 Here, the stone called "omo-karu ishi" (heavy-light stone).  First, you make a wish in front of this stone, and then lift up the stone.  If you feel the stone is lighter than you imagine, your wish will come true and if you feel it is heavier than you expect, then your wish may not come true.

私も試してみたのですが、想像していたとおりの重さ! この場合、願い事はかなうのでしょうか?? Of course I tried it - and I felt it was exactly as heavy as I imagined!!  I don't know if my wish will come true or not in this case!

ここでお参りした後はさらに奥へは行かずにもと来た道を鳥居をくぐって戻りました。 After we walked around the inner shrine, we didn't go further up and just took the same was back to the main shrine.

神社を出ると参道にはお土産物屋さん、食べ物屋さんなどがずらっと並んでいます。私達もとりあえずここでお昼ご飯を食べることにしました。 Outside the shrine are many souvenir shops and restaurants.  We decided to have lunch at one of those restaurants.

夫はにしん蕎麦とお稲荷さんのセットを注文。 My husband ordered the combo of the soba noodles with Pacific herring and inarizushi.

私は天婦羅丼にしました。まあお味は普通。 I ordered the rice bowl with tempura.  Both of our dishes were just OK.

その後伏見稲荷駅から京阪電車に乗って三条までやってきました。今年の京都は寒くて鴨川の桜もまだ全く咲いてませんでした。桜、楽しみにしてたのにな~。 Then we took a train and came to Sanjo street.  This year it was very cold in Kyoto and we couldn't find any cherry blossoms...

途中休憩するため、三条木屋町にあるケーキ屋さん、キルフェボン (Qu’il fait bon) へ。ちょっと待ってからテーブルへ。 After walking around the area, we took a break at a cafe called Qu’il fait bon.

おいしそうなケーキやタルトがショーケースにずら～っと並んでいて、どれにしようか目移りします。これは星型をしたフルーツたっぷりのタルト。 So many beautifully decorated cakes and tarts were in the show case - so difficult to just pick one!

これは白苺のタルト。白い苺なんて食べたことがなかったので食べたかったのですが、一切れ1575円という値段に怯んでしまって注文できませんでした。まあ他のも1000円近くしたのでそんなに変わらないといえば変わらないのですが、変なところで貧乏性が出てしまいます。 This is the white strawberry tart.  I had never had white strawberries, and really wanted to try, but it was very expensive (~$20 a piece, ~$150 for the whole tart!!) so I didn't order this one.

ここも99%女性客です。満席の店内で一瞬男性は夫一人という時もありました (店員さんもみんな女性です)。しばらくして若いカップルがやってきましたが、夫のような中年男性には肩身が狭いかも (彼は全く気にしませんが)。  99% of customers were women - at one time my husband was the only male in the cafe (and the cafe was totally full with customers)!

私は岡山のマスクメロンとマンゴーの乗ったタルト。メロンがとっても甘くてジューシー。 I ordered the tart with muskmelon and mango.  The melon was soooo sweet and juicy.

夫は先ほどの星型をしたタルトを注文。フルーツが10種類くらい乗っていて、これまたおいしい。中は杏仁味のクリームでした。この後お土産などを買うため数時間街中をぶらぶらし、夕食を食べに行くため両親と待ち合わせ。夕食の様子はまた後で。 My husband ordered the tart with lots of fruits (maybe ~10 different kinds).  This was very good, too!

Trip to Taiwan-Japan Day 14 (2)(京都 (Kyoto))

お昼ご飯＆デザートの後は四条から京阪電車に乗って出町柳までやってきました。ここから糺の森を通って下鴨神社まで歩きます。 After teh lunch & dessert, we took a train to visit Shimogamo Shrine.  From teh station, we walked to the shrine through "Tadasu no Mori" (which is the forest associated with the shrine but its name is so ancient that its history is uncertain).

駅から糺の森の入り口までは10分ほど歩かなければなりません。ここには高校生くらいの時に来て以来かも。 I hadn't been here since I was probably in high school.

下鴨神社と糺の森は世界遺産に指定されています。 The shrine and the forest are the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

森にはたくさんの木が生い茂り (原生林)、すごく爽やかで歩いているだけで気分が良くなります。気のせいか空気もきれいな感じが。後で母に聞くと最近ではパワースポットとして人気があるようです。確かに納得です。 The forest today spans over 12 hectares and is well protected - you just feel so comfortable and refreshed by walking through it.

途中いくつかの古い木が御神木として祭られてました (写真左側)。 On the way to the shrine, we found several of very old trees separated from others (left side in the picture) as sacred trees

これは霊石のさざれ石。君が代に歌われているあのさざれ石です。 This rock is called "Sazare-ishi", a kind of boulder grown from pebbles, which is used as a symbol of national unity in the national anthem of Japan.

ここが神社への入り口です。 This is the gate to the shrine.

下鴨神社は数ある京都の神社・仏閣の中でも1番古いものの一つで、創建は紀元前 (弥生時代) までさかのぼるそうです。 The shrine is one of the oldest in Kyoto (which means really, really old) - the history of the shrine extends at least two thousand years (the buildings themselves are not very old as all buildins were destroyed and re-built every 21 years starting from ~ 8th century)

境内には、十二支が配置された7つの社があり、全国的にも珍しい干支の守神が祭られているそうです。これはねずみの社。 Inside the shrine you can find seven tiny shrines which enshrine the Earthly Branches (12 animals in Chinese zodiac signs).  This one is for rat.

下鴨神社にお参りした後はもちろんここ、加茂みたらし茶屋 でみたらし団子を食べねばなりません! 糺の森の各地には鴨の七不思議と呼ばれる伝承があって、その中のひとつが盛夏の土用の頃、御手洗川の源泉である御手洗池から水泡が湧くというものです。この泡をもとに生まれたお菓子がみたらし団子らしいです。由緒正しいお団子です。 After visiting Shimogamo Shrine, you have to stop at "Kamo Mitarashi-Chaya", where "mitarashi dango" (a type of dango skewered onto sticks in groups of 3–5 (traditionally 5) and covered with a sweet soy sauce glaze) originates from (more than 1000 years ago!).

もちろんみたらし団子を注文。一番上のお団子が少し大きく、残りの4個のお団子とは少し離れています。これには串に刺さった団子を人間の体に見立てている (一番上は頭、残りの4個は四肢) という説と、後醍醐天皇が行幸の際、御手洗池で水を掬おうとしたところ、1つ大きな泡が出、続いて四つの泡が出てきた逸話によるという説があるらしいです。 This is the mitarashi dango.  It was cooked to order.

お餅に付いたお焦げが香ばしく、たれの甘さは控えめでておいしい~。私は和菓子ではお餅系のものが一番好きなのですが、その中でもみたらし団子が一番好きかも。みたらし団子好きは小さいときからず~っと変わってません。 It had great burnt fragrance, and the sticky sauce was not overly sweet.  This is one of my favorite Japanese sweets (since I was a kid).  Sooo yummy.

夫はさらにクリームあんみつも注文。アイスクリーム、白玉、さらにわらび餅も付いてボリュームたっぷりでした。 My husband also ordered this dessert, which had sweet red bean, ice cream, shiratama (balls made of rice flour), warabi mochi (a jelly-like confection made from bracken starch).

お店の横には小さなお庭と祠があって、外でお団子を頂くこともできます。 When the weather is good, you can enjoy their sweets at the outside seats, as well.
